Are you looking for a challenging role in web development? The Protein Function development team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) is looking for an experienced and motivated JavaScript developer to contribute to the re-development of one of the most prominent web application in the field of biology, the Universal Protein Resource (UniProt). The Protein Function Development team is located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.


You will work closely with other JavaScript developers and UX designers to provide a cutting-edge web application for the leading resource on protein information, supporting hundreds of thousands of users in academia and industry worldwide. You will also collaborate with a highly dynamic group of software engineers, bioinformaticians and scientists in the team, across EMBL-EBI, and with our Consortium partners internationally. You will work in a team-orientated environment






Qualifications and Experience






You will have a postgraduate degree in Computer science or a related discipline with at least 2 years proven professional experience in web development. Experience working in bioinformatics, biological resource development and/or technical experience within scientific publishing or information science would be an advantage.


Required:


-       Expert knowledge of JavaScript (ES2016 and above) and React


-       Excellent knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3


-       Experience building cross-platform responsive websites


-       A good knowledge of modern build tools like Webpack/Rollup


-       Experience with TDD and JavaScript testing frameworks


-       Use of source control systems (git)


-       Experience in communicating and working with expert users (e.g. in a science community) in a co-development model.


Desirable:


-       Experience with Redux


-       Experience with D3js


-       Familiar with agile methodologies


-       Good understanding of browser rendering behaviour and performance


There will be occasional opportunities to travel overseas to conferences.You will be willing to learn new things and develop your skills and knowledge on the job, but you will also benefit from a range of training opportunities and seminars within the organisation.
