Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack at Qualia Labs, Inc (San Francisco, CA)

At Qualia, we are fundamentally transforming the way real estate professionals, lenders, and homebuyers manage real estate transactions, one of the nation’s largest industries. We are bringing together everyone involved in the closing process onto one shared, secure platform -- basically, we’re making buying a home in America easier, safer, cheaper, and less painful by moving the process online! Qualia was founded in 2015 by Forbes 30 Under 30 Award recipients Nate Baker, Joel Gottsegen and Lucas Hansen. The company is backed by top investors including 8VC, Bienville Capital, Menlo Ventures and Tiger Global and currently processes 15% of all US real estate transactions. Qualia is headquartered in San Francisco, CA and has offices in Austin, TX.

We are hiring entrepreneurial engineers interested in being a part of our scaling engineering team. Our engineers are conscientious hackers who like teamwork but are also comfortable with independent projects. Our engineering team releases new software every week, moves at a fast pace, and works directly with our design and customer-facing teams to imagine and build the new experiences our customers love. Because of that, you’ll get a rewarding variety of projects to work on.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you've been in the industry for a while and have a proven track record of success. You are comfortable taking full responsibility for complex, high-liability projects. You have experience making key architectural decisions and performing the research to back up those decisions. You've dealt with the consequences of your mistakes, and know how to fight fires if necessary. You enjoy mentoring and providing support for less experienced developers. You've thrived in many different environments and realize that each team is unique.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

  • Your work will focus on building web technologies, both frontend and backend. You’ll work on improving and extending our core web applications, diverse software integrations, payment-processing systems, and other exciting new features.

  • Our engineers are generalists, and your responsibilities will be flexible based on company needs as well as your skills and interests.

YOUR BACKGROUND THAT LIKELY MAKES YOU A MATCH

  • We are looking for strong full-stack engineers with 5+ years of experience

  • We value engineers who have good product sense, attention to detail, and passion for the impact of the software they build.

  • You have made key architectural decisions for large projects.

  • You have mentored junior developers.

  • You have worked on multiple engineering teams, both small and large.

THE TECH STACK YOU’LL USE

  • Meteor / Semantic UI / MongoDB

  • Microservice architecture / Docker / AWS

  • Local copy of full production stack for development

  • GitHub for version control and pull requests

WHY QUALIA

  • Our flat company structure empowers engineers to make product decisions

  • We have a collaborative culture where engineers mentor each other

  • Our team members take time to eat together and share conversation at our daily catered lunches

  • We have a fantastic location in a sunny office in downtown San Francisco, easily commutable from anywhere in the Bay Area by BART and MUNI

  • We offer generous compensation and benefits packages including medical, vision, and dental insurance and a flexible PTO policy

ABOUT OUR ENGINEERING TEAM

  • Our engineering team demonstrates and values technical thought leadership.

  • Qualia hosts the official Meteor Developer’s Night in our San Francisco HQ, which is the largest gathering of Meteor developers in the world. The event features talks on Meteor and Javascript development generally, often including talks from Qualia team members.

  • Qualia’s Head of Design, Jack Lukic, is the creator of Semantic UI, one of the most popular open-source design frameworks. Qualia engineers learn this framework, and design patterns more generally, directly from the creator of the framework our front end is built on! Very few companies can say that.

  • As part of our focus on continual learning and development, a Qualia team member gives an educational talk on something they’re interested in every Thursday to the entire engineering and product team. Topics range from Kolmogorov complexity theory to the definition of art, to models of existential risk.

Full Stack Developer at Skyward Federal (Colorado Springs, CO)

We are seeking a motivated Full Stack Developer to join one of our small scrum teams and continue kicking-ass, delivering the sexiest most efficient software known to the government. That’s right, this isn’t your father’s development project, we are building mission critical applications that will shape the future; a future where you have direct impact!

We are truly building the best in breed software, so naturally we are an interesting animal. Our frontend is largely Angular8 and deployed to the web, desktop (via Electron), and mobile (via Cordova). The frontend communicates with backend services though lightweight RESTful API calls to the serviceMesh gateway (Envoy, FreeIPA, NiFi, & HaProxy) which themselves broker requests to an event store (Kafka). Once in Kafka, individual services perform their respective actions in accordance with a pure pub/sub model. Our backend is largely comprised of ’serverless’ microservices, with most being ran on firecracker (AWS Lambda’s engine) and those too large (like Kafka, Elastic Search, etc.) are ran in containers on Kubernetes. Of course, we’ve got some secret sauce here and there, but we are using open standards wherever possible.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be eager to learn new technologies and expand their roles and responsibilities.

  • Excel at translating functional requirements into quality code.

  • Have a knack for efficiency.

  • Be familiar with industry best practices and open-source enablers (libraries, tools, tech).

  • Possess a demonstrable acumen for detail, but not quite debilitating perfectionism.

  • Be comfortable thinking outside the box and proposing better methods to code/structure the app.

  • Be comfortable with agile software development (don’t worry, we aren’t a sweat-shop).

  • Have solid technical understanding and experience with Angular (6+ years).

  • Be familiar with event-streaming architectures (using Kafka & serviceMeshes).

  • Be familiar with modularity and microservice architectures.

  • Have experience creating NodeJS microservices

Each scrum member is both a leader and a follower. As a Senior developer, you will be expected to help mentor more junior developers, but do expect to learn a thing or two yourself.

Some travel may be required on an as needed basis. Eventually, this position may require a government security clearance.

Office hours are flexible with most work performed remotely (as we are a geographically dispersed team) but some actions may require travel and regular team interaction. Most of our team works out of on-trend, workshare office spaces around the nation.

We offer competitive benefits (fully-vested 10% 401k matching, 100% company-paid comprehensive healthcare, all 10 federal holidays & 15 days leave, flexible schedules, educational reimbursements, and much more).

Skyward Federal is a small (but growing) startup bringing the best of breed to the most exciting & unique missions possible. We work hard but play harder. There is constant room for growth and cross-training depending on what your life goals are. Apply now & start your journey today!
