Senior Software Engineer at Bulb Energy (London, UK)

About the team

Bulb is here to help our members cut their energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions. Our product teams make that happen. We’re developing products that will deliver the future of energy - from using AI to read energy meters, to making carbon offsetting fun and simple, from finding out how to get the most from Smart Meter data to helping people get paid for their solar energy. We also power the sign-up journey that helped us become the fastest growing company in the UK and the internal tools that let us deliver an excellent Trust Pilot score.

We work in project-based sprints in integrated teams and encourage an open and transparent working environment.

The following pods are hiring Senior Software Engineers:

Energy Specialist Technology

We enable the Energy Specialist team to provide the best member service in the energy industry. You'll be using technology in interesting ways to automate tasks, simplify workflows, and build improvements to members experiences across products to reduce the need for them to get in touch with us. We're always on the lookout for making things better as we grow.

Growth

The number of people that have their energy supplied by Bulb has grown 1,000% per year and we're on a trend to do the same this year. Join the pod that's working on driving this growth as part of a multidisciplinary team working across the full stack, and help tackle exciting challenges, ambitious opportunities, and powerful products - such as the journey customers use to switch their energy, the most visited Bulb product Bulb.co.uk and more!

Smart

We're responsible for the smart meter rollout at Bulb. This includes everything from allowing member to booking meter installations to the Bulb Account experience once you have a smart meter and analysing the usage data to help us buy energy more efficiently. We're a multi disciplinary team and work closely with the experience team to ensure our members get the best smart meter experience.

Requirements

At Bulb we want to hire people with the experiences necessary to get going quickly, but who are also interested in learning new things and are comfortable working in a changing environment.

  • You take pleasure from clear code, see writing tests as an integral part of the development process and understand the benefit of writing code and tests in small increments.

  • You are keen to learn new technologies and have ideas about how we do things better.

  • You like solving both real world and technical problems.

  • You are an enthusiastic team player who enjoys collaborating across teams and departments.

  • You are passionate about learning and personal growth.

The Stack

At Bulb we use a wide variety of technologies. While we have core technologies that we work with, we're always trying to pick the best tool for the job, and are always looking at what's on the horizon.
Our stack currently includes:

  • Node, Typescript, Koa, Redux, React, React Native, Webpack, Babel, Flow

  • Circle CI, Kubernetes, Docker and Google Cloud Platform

We use Git for source control, write tests and run continuous integration, and review each other’s code through pull requests.

Ideally, you would be familiar with these technologies or similar patterns; notably, Typescript/Javascript coupled with React is a core technology for us. But we’re more interested in your broad experience of software development than of specific tools or libraries. You should be comfortable getting up-to-speed quickly in new tools and platforms. You should be pragmatic and experienced enough to know when a different choice of technology would be more suitable, and comfortable leading explorations into new technologies.

Team Structure

Teams at Bulb are cross-functional, self-organized and autonomous pods.

  • You’ll be working within a growing cross functional team composed of specialists with backgrounds in DevOps, Engineering and Security.

  • We practice Scrum/Kanban and work lean.

  • Work is not siloed, you’re able to commit across the stack, and you have a view of all the features the teams are working on.

  • We use data to drive continuous improvement in our development process and we review this data in our fortnightly retrospectives.

  • We reflect the Bulby working culture.

Benefits

  • Be part of a growing technology startup and help shape the future of energy.

  • Training budget of £1000 a year, plus five working days to spend on professional or personal development. You can use this for training courses, books or conferences.

  • 33 days holiday a year (including bank holidays) and the option to buy up to 5 more.

  • After a year at Bulb, you can take an additional month of unpaid leave to travel, work on personal projects or simply to recharge and reboot.

  • 12 weeks of full pay for maternity, paternity or adoption leave.

  • Every team member has the option to buy shares in Bulb at a later date, at a discounted price. We all own a bit of Bulb.

  • Activities to improve your mental and physical well being including office yoga and meditation.

  • Private health care with Vitality

  • Pension plan with employer contributions, and a cycle to work scheme.

Love Dogs and a Full-Stack Engineer? at PetPocketbook (Boston, MA)

We’re looking for a talented and motivated senior full-stack engineer with 3+ years of experience to join as our second or third engineer on the team. You will own projects from end-to-end by influencing initial feature specs, building backend APIs, writing front-end code, and overseeing ongoing improvements for deployed features.

About PetPocketbook:
Our mission is to simplify pet care for pet people, starting with a modern, online and mobile platform for small pet services businesses to automate and streamline their operations so that they can focus on what they love -- the pets they care for. Our end-to-end business management solution is tailored for pet care and includes CRM, automated schedule optimization, staff management, seamless billing and payments, marketing tools, integrated analytics and comprehensive reporting – basically everything a business needs all in one place. Our initial focus is on dog walking & sitting companies, but we expect to span the entire pet care domain, including grooming, training, boarding, and even veterinary services down the road.

We launched our beta 18 months ago and now have 550+ pet care professionals relying on our software to complete their daily appointments and 15K+ pet parents managing their pet’s care on our platform. We believe we are at an inflection point in our growth, having just closed our seed round of funding with which we expect to 5X our scale in the next 12-18 months.

Technical requirements:

  • Full-stack engineer with 3+ years of full-time work experience in software engineering

  • Comfortable with touching any part of our tech stack as 1 of 3 engineers on our team

  • Experience with Ember or similar frameworks (React, etc.) and Ruby/Rails or similar frameworks (Django, etc.)

  • Experience with AWS or similar cloud services

  • Experience turning wireframes and mockups into elegantly executed code

Who we’re looking for:

  • Entrepreneurial mindset with a hands-on, get-stuff-done attitude

  • Self-motivated with excellent work ethic

  • Team player with strong communication skills and capable of working cross-functionally

  • Superb problem solver with strong critical thinking skills, who loves rolling up your sleeves to build things on your own but also know when to ask for help

  • Passionate about creating memorable, delightful experiences for customers, who may come from all walks of life

  • Strong desire to work in a pet friendly office and would love to support animal rescue work, if you’re not involved already

What you’ll do day-to-day:

  • Tackle a wide variety of technical problems throughout the stack and contribute daily to all parts of our product code base

  • Build a simple, beautiful, intuitive product that our customers genuinely love

  • Work closely with our Founder to understand customer pain points, come up with solutions, and the prototype, iterate, and launch daily

  • Own what you build as you architect, test, and refine PetPocketbook’s product suite

  • Hang with our office pups, Remington and Bailey

Examples of projects you could work on:

  • Developing our marketplace to connect pet parents with businesses on PetPocketbook, including search and recommendation algorithms incorporating expertise compatibility, schedule availability, geolocation, price, and connections-based endorsements.

  • Architecting and implementing a central messaging system for our companies to communicate with their clients through any messaging medium (i.e. email, text, Facebook messenger, etc.)

  • Strengthening our test suite. We’ve been iterating quickly and have a little catching up to do around developing fulsome tests to ensure code stability. As you work on each feature, you will also be working to improve the comprehensiveness and effectiveness of our test coverage.

  • Refining our data architecture. PetPocketbook will become a massive digital pet community built on an intricate web of trusted relationships between pet people and businesses. You will help design our architecture accordingly to support that vision.

  • Creating an algorithm for optimizing our company’s schedules that takes into account their walkers routes, pet behaviors, and individual time requirements.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. Even if you don't check every box, but see yourself contributing, please apply.
