The Hesburgh Libraries of Notre Dame seek a collaborative life-long learning Senior Software Engineer for a three-and-a-half-year Mellon foundation funded position. You will lead the development of a unified preservation and exhibition platform for the digital assets of the Hesburgh Libraries and the Snite Museum of Art, focusing on adapting, enhancing, and supplementing existing Hesburgh Libraries technical solutions to meet campus and community stakeholders needs.
In collaboration with other Hesburgh Libraries technology units and the Snite Museum of Art's Outreach Specialist, you will be responsible for designing, testing, and implementing scalable software applications and components. You will research, implement, and share current trends and innovations from the technology best practices and standards of libraries and museums. You will also be responsible for identifying opportunities to integrate with and contribute to influential community open-source projects: Samvera (formerly Hydra), IIIF , Fedora Commons, and Blacklight.
The position requires a high degree of accountability and an ability to collaborate with professionals of different technical backgrounds and experiences. You will work with the Project Management Office of the Hesburgh Libraries and the Snite Museum of Art's Outreach Specialist to manage project timelines, deliverables, and resources to ensure the realization of the planned grant objectives.
Duties include:
• Design, implement, document, test, deploy and support integrated library and museum software applications.
• Architect and implement robust and dependable infrastructure components, data services, and software integration services.
• Work with Outreach Specialist as well as quality assurance, usability, and project management professionals to engage diverse demographics of users to deliver the grant goals.
• Plan and manage software development tasks
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related programming experience of 4-6 years.
• Exceptional verbal and written skills.
• Commitment to writing, reviewing, and updating documentation.
• Experience with or demonstrated ability to learn:
– Web technologies and standards such as HTML , CSS , and Javascript
– Ruby, Ruby on Rails, and/or NodeJS
– PostgreSQL, mySQL, or SQL and schema designs
– RDF , JSON -LD, and Linked Data
– Amazon Web Services
– Test-driven development
– Javascript frameworks such as jQuery, ReactJS, or ViewJS
– Object-oriented design and implementation
– Linux administrative skills
– Git or other distributed version control systems
– Web-based APIs and REST
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working within a library or museum environment is preferred, and we are particularly interested in someone with experience working in both fields.
