Junior PHP Developer at Flypay (London, UK)

At Flyt, we believe that the way venues (serving food & drinks) acquire customers is perfectly suited for a world that no longer exists. Users have moved on to apps on their phones, home delivery services, and will soon tap into some real crazy possibilities with technology. The good folks at Venues know it's absolutely possible to get customers this way, but installing tech and using it takes months, if not years to get setup and running. And, that's not what they do. It's broken. We must fix it.

We are building - what we call - "The Hub", a universal integration platform for the hospitality industry, that seamlessly connects venues serving food and drinks to the 1000s of apps that customers love, all through One Universal Award Winning API. From that, we will build the second act of our vision - a marketplace - where services and venues get to work together, in minutes not months, so installing technology is made easy. So they both get more customers.

We work with leading hospitality operators and consumer platforms including Nando’s, Mitchells and Butlers, PizzaExpress, Just Eat, Uber Eats, Facebook and more to enable solutions in thousands of venues across the UK (and soon, the US).

How you can contribute

We want to hear from creative and capable engineers who love solving problems.

What will make you a great fit

  • You love reading, learning and leveling-up on everything code and software engineering related. You might not have several years of commercial experience but if you share with us your personal projects that will impress us, that is enough. You crave the rhythm of a startup (shipping daily, several times a day). You are not put off by challenging problems and are always hungry to learn more.

  • You need to be curious, try new tech that makes your development skills better.

  • You have the energy and excitement, and you are driven by finally finding and cracking an issue.

  • You will work in an Agile environment, and we expect you to have know the basics of Agile, or at least a willingness to learn.

  • You are working on being good at PHP, you know OOP, care about testing and can learn to be a superstar, at using a debugger.

  • London, UK based.

Our tech stack:

Our current PHP application powers both our API and POS integration layers and, at the moment, makes up the majority of our development effort. Recently we have introduced some Golang and NodeJS services as we break this monolithic API into slimmer microservices. We don't require that you're a PHP ninja, but you must be willing to pick up code written in that programming language (or at the very least, be willing to learn).

Other recent projects we've run have included: modelling POS communication using a stream of events using AWS Kinesis and Node JS Serverless Lambda Functions, a migration from AWS EC2 to Kubernetes and site reliability work to ensure we can scale our flagship products inline with our current growth.

What we offer:

  • We don't believe in providing competitive salaries. So we pay Top of Market for the right people. This is not to say we're competitive. We're not. We're just a bunch of smart people wanting to work with even smarter people. The salary band for this role (depending on your experience) is £25k - £40k.

  • A great working environment with a ping pong table, bar (serving beer/cider) and breakout areas.

  • Personal learning and development budget.

  • Working in a fast growing company with global expansion plans.

  • Flexible working hours and a work from home policy.

  • Personal MacBook Pro (to setup the way you work best)

  • Regular office events including weekly yoga and other sports.

  • Cycle to work scheme – http://bit.ly/2G9ejjF.

Take a look at our Instagram account to get an insight into our day to day life.

The legal boring stuff: We hire the best people based on an evaluation of their abilities and effectiveness. We don’t discriminate against employees on the basis of any other personal characteristic or any classification protected by the Equality Act 2010.

Why Work for Vamp?

  • The top bosses are passionate about the company’s vision, but how we get there technologically speaking, well that's your turf.

  • Be a part of an ever-expanding international company, currently operating in Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, UAE and London.

  • Above all, you get to build and be part of software that gets used by thousands of people, soon to be growing to hundreds of thousands of people.

About the Role

As a back-end software engineer at Vamp, reporting into the Technical Director, you’ll be:

  • The go-to-expert for anything API and database related

  • Developing robust, superb quality, performant APIs for our content creator-facing app as well as internal tools

  • Integrating 3rd-party APIs such as Instagram, Facebook, PayPal, Stripe, Sendle, Qwilr, Firebase, and etc. into the Vamp API

  • Continually maintaining and optimising our API and database codebase

  • Maintaining and updating Vamp infrastructure on AWS as necessary

  • Contributing ideas on improving the development process

Required Technical Skills

To be able to do your day-to-day tasks and duties at Vamp, you will need to possess at a minimum the following technical know-how:

  • Elixir/Phoenix (preferred but not a deal breaker)

  • Postgres

  • Git version control

  • AWS

  • TDD

  • Bash and shell scripting

  • JSON APIs

  • Other server-side frameworks such as Ruby on Rails are a bonus

Also, you'll find it easier to get your hands dirty from the first day if you have been working with these before:

  • GraphQL

  • React, React-Native

  • Property-Driven Testing

Development Team Culture

Will our team culture fit you? Will we provide you with a ground for growth, challenge, and satisfaction? Let's find out:

  • Do you hate it when an API request takes more than 1 second?

  • Do you live, breathe, and dream about building better and faster APIs?

  • Do you take ownership of the team's work even though you were not involved in its initial creation?

  • Do you welcome changes without getting defensive on the time and effort already spent on a piece of work?

  • Do you like to focus more on getting the job done than the politics involved in getting a job done?

  • Do you see a new experimental technology as a "let's assess this" opportunity rather than as a "stay away, too early" can of worms?

If you answer 'yes' to most of these questions then we'd be thrilled to meet you.

We operate as autonomous multi-disciplined squads in each of our 4 major projects: API, mobile, dashboard and analytics. Each team decides for itself what tools and languages to use, and decisions are made as a team.

Show us what you’ve got and apply now. We are excited to grow our team and to have you in it as part of our journey.

Senior Full Stack Developer at Flypay (London, UK)

  • You are obsessed with shipping product to customers. Your code is great - that’s table-stakes. You know that what really matters is putting product in front of customers and how they end up (or not) using it. You crave the rhythm of a startup (shipping daily, several times a day). You know that code quality, code reviews, and testing exist in service of what gets put in front of customers and are not something we-we do just because. At heart, you're a geek, about what you do and who you do it with. You love reading, learning and leveling-up on everything code and software engineering related.

  • You fix things when they're broken. You feel downright uncomfortable when you spot something that isn't great yet.

  • You love working with difficult things and making them sing. Sometimes we work with POS from the 1930s and we have to work out how we will integrate it and make it awesome.

  • You often get inspired by ideas and start personal projects so you learn new technology or build the next big thing.

  • You are excited about the what we do.

  • You have an "eye for design" - e.g. you can build a screen from Zeplin / Sketch and adjust accordingly.

  • You have worked professionally in an agile environment, with cross-functional teams.

  • 4+ Years Experience, amongst which, you worked in other startups

  • London, UK Based

Our tech stack:

  • Great to Excellent at Frontend Frameworks (React, Redux, CSS, Javascript)

  • Great to Excellent at Building RESTful Services (PHP or Node)

Our current PHP application powers both our API and POS integration layers and, at the moment, makes up the majority of our development effort. Recently we have introduced some Golang and NodeJS services as we break this monolithic API into slimmer micro services.

The salary band for this role (depending on your experience) is £60k - £85k.

  • You coach and provide feedback to your team members.

You'll work in a Scrum team of four to six members formed mostly by Python developers with a passion for data. The team is managed by a Team Lead. The Teams backlog is cured by the Product Owner and the Scrum Master. Your team works closely together with Business Analysts and a team of Data Scientists, providing them with data structures they can easily use to support company decisions.

A day at the office

After your morning Scrum standup, Rafael sends you a Pull Request to speed up the transfer of data from the ERP system using a new messaging system. You review it together and then merge the code. After that, you join David, the Product Owner, who wants to discuss and design a new architecture for providing insights about Customer Service costs to the Finance department. Just before lunch, you pass by Andres, a data scientist who is working on a new Machine Learning algorithm which can forecast warehouse stock. You help him moving some data to BigQuery. You invite him to have lunch together with your team. On the way back, you share your concerns about the Google Adwords ingest process with David. It's losing records, so you want to refactor some of the python code. You add a few automated tests, send the Pull Request to your teammate, Dirk, for review and at 16:30, the improvements are automatically deployed via our continuous integration pipeline. By 17:30, you're done for the day and, together with your team members, head to the bar for a drink.

A day at the office

After grabbing a cup of coffee, the daily stand-up with your team starts. Julia enthusiastically mentions her latest work on the visual design of the new login page. you pair program with Jaimie on a story to actually log in via a social media account. After some fiddling around and writing code, you verify it's done and functionality is deployed to production. Whew, it's already time for lunch!

In the afternoon it's time for your 1:1 with Victoria. She wants to have a chat about things she'd like to improve upon Together, you come up with some actions and you share your experiences on the value of pair programming and how it helped you as a developer. You immediately put it into practice by pair programming with her on her current story.

At the end of the day, it's time to unwind. You propose to shoot some pool with a few team members. Now, how to hit that eight ballcorner pocket?
