A really good Node.js engineer at The Farmer's Dog (New York, NY)

SENIOR BACKEND (OR FULL STACK) ENGINEER

ABOUT US

The Farmer’s Dog is a VC backed (Series A, raised $10.1M) direct-to-consumer pet health brand on a mission to disrupt the $60 Billion pet food industry. Our products are human-quality, personalized and manufactured on demand.

This is a rare opportunity to be part of a well-funded, already profitable team that’s working on a truly unique product with a massive market opportunity.

Our investors have also backed companies like Warby Parker, Harry’s, Casper, Birchbox, Instagram, and Sweetgreen.

DESCRIPTION

We’re building a subscription based e-commerce business from the ground up and have plenty of interesting problems to solve. Our aim is to offer a seamless subscription experience through on-time production, customized products and best in class customer support.

How are we different from a regular e-commerce shop? Each and every one of our customers has a completely unique subscription plan and shipping frequency. Every individual pack of food is produced for a specific dog and has the pet name and date of manufacturing printed straight on the pack. The average time from production to delivery is less than 2 weeks.

Some of the things you could be working on:

  • predictive analysis; making sure we produce the right amount while factoring in account churn, growth rate and current customers

  • minimizing customer support tickets by improving subscription management portal

  • adding a mixing plan option to checkout flow through which a customer could set a price and receive a plan that facilitates supplementing their current food with ours

  • creating a Dockerized microservice that fetches charges from Stripe, generates a monthly tax report, and mails it

  • simplifying the process of modifying an order once it has been billed and supporting partial refunds and billings

  • writing unit tests using Mocha and Nightwatch

Our architecture is based around a NodeJS API that’s hosted on AWS. We have two web applications that interface with it: 1) the consumer facing website that has content pages, checkout flow, and end-user subscription management and 2) the back-office tool that the fulfillment and customer support team uses for reporting, customer management, and advanced subscription options.

Both frontend application use the same boilerplate and are written in Redux and React. Additionally, we have a number of microservices to handle webhooks and long running jobs like generating customized booklets and handling shipment tracking events.

Skills & Requirements

You should have at least 3 years of experience and a demonstrated ability to build and ship production services. You should feel confident working with NodeJS or Redux. A degree in Computer Science or equivalent.

We take pride in writing software the right way. That means peer reviews, ample time to refactor code, and write tests.

Node.js, JavaScript, React, Redux, AWS, Docker.

We have a pet-friendly office in Brooklyn, New York.

Cloud Engineer at Coolblue (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

As a Cloud Deployment Engineer at Coolblue you help our developers deploy 100 pull requests per day.

What you tell people at parties

"I've got my head in the clouds all day long."

What you really do

  • You maintain and improve our deployment pipelines, so the developers can smoothly and reliably release their applications.
  • You create and maintain the infrastructure as code  for our AWS cloud environment.
  • You support developers in deploying their applications.
  • You experiment with new technology to research future use.
  • You automate recurring tasks to make your job (and that of the developers) easier.

How you do it

  • You like to be challenged. You see the obstacles to get to a cloud-based infrastructure as an opportunity to learn.
  • You share knowledge with your Tech Development colleagues to make them self-sufficient. Better teach a man to fish than to give him one, right?
  • You stay cool when things break. You search for the root cause and dont stop until you find it. Once you do, you make sure this cant fail again.
  • You don't wait for things to come to you. You go out and get them. You're self motivated, communicative and get things done.
  • You work together, because you like to learn from your colleagues. You coach your team members and provide them with honest feedback.
  • You have your own opinion and youre able to voice it in a constructive discussion.

Team

You will be part of the Cloud Deployment Team: a team consisting of smart, experienced and highly motivated engineers who want to take our IT Development department to the the next step in cloud infrastructure. The engineers in this team know everything about the systems of our web platform.  Your team will be supported by a Team Lead, Product Owner and a Scrum Master.

A day at the office

During the stand-up, you agree to work with Jamie (our cloud expert) on moving some domains to Route 53. The configuration is not complex, but you need to call with our current hosting provider. It's a bit of a challenge as it is hard to get the right information about what they are doing and when. However, you work closely with them and together you get it done by lunch.

In the afternoon you talk to the Product Assortment development team and discuss how we can use data from Google to give customers assortment recommendations. You discuss different options for implementation with the team and agree to join them next sprint for a few days to create an API Gateway with some Lambda functions and an Elasticache Redis cluster.
At the end of the day, Frank (senior developer from your team) demonstrates the new solution for the assets of the website. They are now being served from an S3 bucket, with CloudFront caching in front of it. It works great, so well take it into Production next week. After that, it's time to go out and have a nice specialty beer. You do check your beers in Untappd, right?

What we're asking

  • You are smart and have some way to prove it.
  • You are awesome with Linux, Windows or both! Since we have .NET, Delphi and PHP stacks we can use your experience.
  • You are strong with configuration management tools like Puppet, Chef, or Ansible.
  • You believe in configuration management - if its not managed, its not real.
  • You know scripting and have development experience in Python, Ruby, Javascript or plain old Bash.
  • You automate all the things from bootstrap to backup.
  • You have a DevOps mindset with a strong drive to get things done. You automate. You collaborate. You communicate.
  • You have experience working with CloudFormation. Certification is a plus, otherwise we'll make sure you get it.
  • You have done similar work before, at least a couple of years.
  • You think big and start small. In the end, it's about getting things done.
  • You take pride in what you do, but welcome feedback.
  • You get bonus points if you have experience working with Scrum and if you have experience working with other cloud providers. You also get bonus points for writing a nice cover letter, you would make team lead Sander Knape very happy with that!
  • You are willing to relocate to Rotterdam or somewhere nearby.

What we're offering

  • Money.
  • Over 30 training courses at our own Coolblue University.
  • A 10% discount on all of our products.
  • An awesome workplace. With freshly prepared meals, monthly TGIF drinks, epic Coolblue parties, and an informal, playful office space.
  • 25 leave days. As long as you'll promise to come back.
  • Travel allowance and a retirement plan.
  • An office at the best possible location. It's only a short stumble away from Rotterdam Central Station. Or a 2-minute walk.

  • You continuously expand and improve our Oracle database.
  • You create awesome things that have an immediate impact and make sure that theyre secure and maintainable in the long run.

Time for action! Together with Jos, you work on the SQL statement modifications and push them through our database deployment pipeline. After that, it's time for lunch.

In the afternoon, you have a refinement session with the team and Product Owner on upcoming stories and ideas. The team chooses to focus on the ideas around how they can best facilitate an automated way of deploying and testing Oracle schema changes: lets do this!

Team

You'll work in a team of multidisciplinary Engineers with various areas of expertise, all focused on delivering the database services to Coolblue. by via developer jobs - Stack Overflow

Full Stack Developer at Technical University of Denmark (Copenhagen, Denmark)

Full Stack Developer
Are you a Full-Stack Open Source-oriented developer of web-based solutions?
Do you want to be part of a development and operations team anchored at one of Europe’s most ambitious research libraries?

The total number of all research publications ever published since 1860 within STM reaches roughly 200 million. Unique in our domain, DTU Library maintains a local copy of metadata descriptions of all of them (and local PDF copies for about 10 percent). We are using this to develop and operate a cutting-edge digital library service for our users.

As our newest Full-Stack Developer, you will join our Library Systems team of developers, ops and project coordinators. We are a team of 13 dedicated colleagues, and DTU Library has 45 employees in total. Together, we push the limits for how a modern digital research library serves its users.

As a team, we are jointly responsible for maintaining the two primary digital library components: The Library Services Platform & Discovery Service (DTU FindIt: http://findit.dtu.dk/) and the DTU Research Database (DTU Orbit: http://orbit.dtu.dk/). We are also responsible for supporting adjacent systems, applications and the necessary infrastructure beneath these services—an infrastructure designed to meet the demands for scale, throughput, performance and elasticity.

The job
You will be working with creating, improving and sustaining our services for our users. Optimization—often at a scale outside what is usually described in textbooks—is a common part of this. Adjusting the content and/or configuration of our Apache Solr instance (currently loaded with approximately200 million documents), while not losing service, is not an uncommon subtask.

Our team combines a balanced mix of skills, and teamwork is essential to our everyday activities. Collaboration with stakeholders at multiple levels is key to our success. You will interact with colleagues from other teams, library management and often external colleagues anchored at international and national partners.

The environment
We develop and operate web applications enabling our users to service themselves to the largest extent possible and interface with our librarian-based support services when they cannot. Enabling easy discovery (search and delivery) in the global corpus of relevant literature is a large part of this.

Our technical environment is local and dominated by Open Source software, typically developed in collaboration with communities of likeminded university libraries in Denmark and abroad. We currently use Ruby on Rails, Blacklight, Apache Solr, Hydra, Fedora Commons, Java, Debian GNU/Linux supplemented with Pure, SFX and EZProxy. We have a strong focus on continuous integration/delivery and automation, currently using tools and technologies such as Docker, Puppet, Gitlab, and Redmine.

Primary areas of responsibility
You will:

  • Work with your closest colleagues to develop and maintain existing web-based services and bring about new ones, ensuring the highest quality experience for our users

  • Apply best-practice web virtues, web methodologies, and web technologies to our applications

  • Be part of our journey to transform today’s infrastructure and solutions exposing predominantly bibliographic objects to support the rapidly emerging phenomena in the Open Science of tomorrow (Research Data, Linked Open Data, etc.)

  • Utilize your experience in collaboration with other teams to take our web-based service to the next level

  • Work with and keep yourself updated on trends and developments in Open Source, Search and other library-relevant technologies and methodologies

Our expectations
We expect you to:

  • Be a skilled and experienced Ruby programmer motivated by large-scale challenges that call for thinking and exploring outside standard manuals and textbooks. Experience with Solr is a plus.

  • Be passionate about programming and understand the role, potential, and limitations of homegrown/-operated software in an organisation. Experience with/from research libraries is a plus.

  • Take responsibility for the quality, well-being and durability of our collective codebase; not only parts done by you, but the entire base. Experience with how to apply web paradigms (e.g., Progressive Enhancement, Single Page Apps, etc.) in web applications is a plus.

  • Know how to ensure the smooth and automated deployment of multi-branched, flexible development and operational environments, and why this matters to efficient service development and maintenance. Experience with automation, Puppet and Docker is a plus.

  • Move around natively in a Linux/Open Source environment and appreciate a short distance between development and operation

  • Have a firm sense of accountability

  • Speak, read and write English fluently. Danish proficiency is a plus.

We are looking for a colleague with the following personal skills:

  • Strong teamplayer

  • End-user-oriented

  • Strategic mindset

  • Analytical

What we offer in return
DTU Library offers an exciting and challenging job involving a variety of tasks in a passionate, informal, and family-friendly organisation, with good colleagues and a strong international atmosphere. We offer good opportunities for enhancing your skills and competences, as the personal development and ongoing education of employees is core to DTU.

Salary and appointment terms
Salary and appointment terms are in accordance with the LC/CO10-collective agreement and the organisational agreement for IT employees (PROSA) in the service of the state, the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) or other relevant collective agreements.
