Hei utvikler!

Fortsatt her? Bra!

I Fiken får du

Database Automation Engineer (DBA) at Coolblue (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

As a Database Automation Engineer, youre responsible for creating, improving and automating the database ecosystem for multiple database engines.

What you tell people at parties

If a database is like a universe, Im the efficient astronomer. *Mind=blown*.

What you really do

  • You manage the database environments for all our applications.
  • You continuously improve the way developers are working with databases, by building automated processes to deliver production and non production environments.
  • You provide a framework for developers to securely push database related changes into testing, acceptance and production environments.

How you do it

  • You shovel databases from one environment to another, preferably automated and in real-time.
  • Everything you create and automate is testable and you support developers in doing so.
  • You select the right tool for the job and independently decide which database engine to use.
  • You present your ideas in a simple way so its understood by all technical and non-technical alike.
  • You use managed services where possible: epic time management.
  • You excel in automating database administration, so much so that it takes up no time at all. You can then spend all that extra time on database development instead of operations.

Team

You'll work in a team of multidisciplinary engineers. This means that you'll be able to expand your skill set to other areas, or simply have a full view on how everything comes together, so you can make an even bigger impact. Your team also has a Scrum Master and a Product Owner.

A day at the office

After your first cup of coffee of the day, you check the Datadog dashboard to see if the automated data masking process has finished successfully. Turns out it has. Awesome! Great news to share with the GDPR team during the stand-up.

After the stand-up, you have a meeting with Software Developer Irapuan and Database Administrator Rob. Youre going to discuss how to automate deployment of big schema changes for our Oracle databases. Thats quite a mouthful. Together with Rob, youve already been prototyping to validate some approaches, so youre able to quickly agree on a solution which can be applied in the next sprint.

Today is also team lunch day. In the Slack team channel, your teammate Tim already proposed some ideas, from towers of pizza boxes to a cat-café. It turns out that Lirida has the best idea: trying out a new Mexican restaurant. Tim is a bit disappointed that his cat-café option didnt make it, but burritos sound pretty great to him too.

After the nachos and fajitas, its time to open up your Python IDE. Youll be showing off your next level skills by working on automating the near-real time replication of the on-premises Oracle database to AWS. Try saying that 10 times.

What were asking

  • You have at least 5 years of experience as a software or database developer/ engineer with a high interest in infrastructure and databases.
  • You have maintained, designed, and built for availability and scalability in business critical applications.
  • Youre great in either Oracle, Microsoft SQL, or MySQL; but can also join team conversations on other database engines. Amazon Web Services Aurora, for example.
  • You understand the process and requirements of having databases refreshed and delivered in multiple environments.
  • You have experience in building application delivery pipelines.
  • You have strong knowledge of:
    • Scripting languages like Python and Bash
    • Automated database schema changes
    • CI/CD toolings and platforms
    • Scalable deployment strategies
    • Automated DTAP environments
    • Versioning of code with for example GIT
  • Its a big plus if you have:
    • Worked before with tools like Teamcity, Puppet, Ansible.
    • Have used database cloud solutions like Amazon RDS & Aurora.
    • Experience with public speaking and organising training sessions.

What we're offering

  • Money.
  • Over 30 training courses at our own Coolblue University.
  • An awesome and fun workplace. With freshly prepared meals, monthly TGIF drinks, epic Coolblue parties, and an informal, playful office space.
  • 25 leave days. As long as you'll promise to come back.
  • Travel allowance and a retirement plan.
  • Relocation assistance, from a to z (if you live abroad).
  • Dutch language courses. To help you become a Rotterdammert.
  • An international work environment. With colleagues from places like Belgium, Spain, Australia, Mexico, and Italy.

Team

You'll be part of the Data Scientist team, which consists of a Data Scientist, a Scrum Master, and a Product Owner. They have different levels of experience and you'll support them in becoming even more amazing than they already are.

A day at the office

Today, you're challenged with improving the weekly sales forecasting models. Before you get started, you need to gather the necessary data from our systems and plot it in such a way that you see the situation in terms of precision. First, youll have a talk with Matthias and Giuseppe, who've already worked on this problem before.

After the meeting, you've come up with an idea for a new prototype that improves the forecast with help of a small sample of the time series. For your prototype, you decide to create a script written in R and/or Python.

Nice! You increased the precision of the forecast by an average of 2%. It only pays off when the algorithm is implemented, so therefore you make plans how you are going to do this in the upcoming weeks.

What we're asking

  • A university-level degree, MSc. or PhD. in Mathematics, Computer science, or Statistics.
  • At least 6 years of relevant business experience in a similar environment (experience only in academia is not enough).

  • A discount on all of our products.
  • An awesome workplace. With freshly prepared meals, monthly TGIF drinks at our own bar, epic Coolblue parties, team activities, and an informal, playful office space.
  • An office at the best possible location. It's just a hop, skip, and jump from Rotterdam Central Station. Or a 2-minute walk.
  • 25 leave days. As long as you'll promise to come back.
  • Travel allowance and a retirement plan.

  • You continuously improve our Oracle database environments.
  • You make sure our MS SQL and MySQL environments are optimally managed.

How you do it

  • You have Oracle database as your core skill, but you also know your way around MS SQL and MySQL.
  • You design and build supporting systems needed to keep a database up and running.
  • Youre hands-on, working with your team to design, implement, deliver, and troubleshoot the databases for Coolblue.
  • You present your ideas in a simple way so its understood by all techies and non-techies alike.

Team

This means that you will have the opportunity to expand your skill set to other areas or simply have a full view on how everything comes together, enabling you to make an even bigger impact. Your team will be complemented by a Scrum Master and a Product Owner.

A day at the office

This morning you start checking the newly delivered Oracle schema changes pipeline. It looks good and youre happy to report in the stand-up that its ready for use.

After the stand-up, you get together with Jos, who is a Developer, to discuss the MS SQL statement improvements youve caught the day before in Datadog. It seems likely that we could reduce the execution time by optimizing the statement slightly.

This sounds very promising and after a brainstorm with your team and Jos, you come up with several changes that could be made. You work together with Jos to make the SQL statement modifications and push them through our database deployment pipeline. After that, it's lunchtime!

In the afternoon, you have a refinement session on upcoming stories and ideas with the team and the Product Owner. The team chooses to focus on exploring AWS Aurora capabilities. You are excited to learn more about this, and after a refuelling at lunch, youre ready for the session.
