Polyglot Developer - Java & Python at Zopa (London, UK)

Polyglot Developer (Java & Python)

Job description

At Zopa, we’re shaping the future of finance.

We offer simple loans and smart investments that help people take control of their finances and do more with their money. In the 12 years we’ve been in business, we’ve helped more than 60,000 people lend over £2.3 billion to 246,000 UK consumers.

And our journey’s only just beginning. In November 2016 we announced our plans to build a next generation bank so that we can bring a greater range of smart, ethical finance products to even more people.

We are looking for Software Engineers that would relish the opportunity to work with Java & Python and collaborate on projects which will continue to enhance our stack and take us to the next level. Our new backend has a stream processing architecture, implemented via Kafka Streams. It is composed of Java and Python processing nodes.

This is a perfect opportunity to pick-up other languages, that you have always wanted to work with. We are looking for candidates with a very good understanding of either Java or Python (C# is a plus), and a willingness to learn the other(s). You’ll be working in a team of experience developers that can program in several languages with a focus on Python who will help shape your development skills and the exposure to Data Science teams.

The projects you may be involved in include:

  • Enhancing our existing suite of credit, pricing, fraud and risk services (Java & Python).

  • Working with our data scientists to implement and enhance machine learning components.

  • Integrating python services into the new Kafka-Streams based architecture.

  • Creating and adapting analytic and monitoring services that drive business decisions.

You will build solutions that solve real-world problems, in a true cross-functional team, collaborating closely with business analysts and talented data scientists who come from institutions such as CERN and NASA. Daily interaction with stakeholders and key business users is a way of life here. Developers have a regular dialogue with product owners, analysts and data scientists within and outside the team, and interact with them on a daily basis. We are big believers in a lean philosophy and flexibility in implementation, while we’re also aiming to achieve stack consistency and alignment across the board.

How We Work:

At Zopa we are pragmatic programmers - both the cutting edge and the tried and tested get a voice. Our platform is a mix of Python, Java and C# with a growing importance of Java. We are strongly committed to Python as a key language in our technology stack and have big plans for the future.

What we are looking for:

  • Experience in one of the two (Java/Python), and basic understanding or keen-ness to learn the others. We're looking for experienced engineers that have solved big challenges through ingenious ideas and execution.

  • You must be happy to talk to key stakeholders on a daily basis and be able to understand and be interested in the business objectives of the company.

  • Product-focused engineers are a must - you will be part of a team that is on the front line of our business and you will see the direct impact of your work.

  • You must place strong emphasis on testing (unit, integration, acceptance, end-to-end). We are a financial institution and a strong commitment to quality is essential.

  • Be comfortable with reading legacy code

  • Any experience in microservices and message-based architectures in the past (and understand both the pros and cons) is a massive plus

Agoda is the largest and fastest growing online hotel booking platform in Asia, and as a Priceline Group company, we are part of the largest online travel company in the world.

Why Agoda?
  • At Agoda, you'll find a team of smart and engaged people collaborating to find elegant and beautiful solutions to complex problems
  • We have each others backs and you'll work closely with the team to build great products
  • The team you will be joining is multi-cultural, multi-lingual, and we're all travellers at heart

If you're passionate about the idea of joining a strong engineering team that's obsessed about learning, getting better every single day, and tackling big and interesting technical and business challenges, then read on.

Why Agoda Mobile Apps Team?

We're very proud about our Android app, which has become a core part of our business. You'll be working on a product that's evolved tremendously and still has lots of room to grow.

Here are some interesting facts about us:
  • We write our code in the MVP pattern with a lot of lessons learned from earlier MVVM work. Our goal is to use the best patterns and SOLID principals to achieve ever-increasing code quality and team velocity
  • We are implementing with Mosby and our favourite Java8 features, which means you'll enjoy reading our code-base again and again because of how alluring it is
  • We love A/B testing features, this will help you better understand your audience and the impact of the work you do on the business
  • All of our work is covered by a solid suite of JUnit and Espresso UI tests (we're very serious about this - we have around 5 hours of UI tests if you run them serially!) We automate everything. Love of mockito, Robolectric, and adb required.
  • We support over 40 locales (and still haven't solved one key localisation challenge which is RTL)
  • Git lets us make our magic. We are unlike almost 99% of App development teams in that merge multiple scrum teams work constantly into a common code base. Expertise in all things Git - mandatory.
  • And of course, we take code reviews very seriously, because we're obsessed about quality and developing together as a team
  • Must have knowledge of RxJava, Dagger2, jUnit 4, mockito, Robolectric, espresso, Retrofit, Fresco, Analytics (Fabric, Google Analytics, etc), A/B testing

What else?

With Agoda you can grow rapidly as an engineer.
  • You will work with top Android developers
  • Have the ability to use and expand your experience
  • Have a big impact on the business.

If you are keen to try and learn new things, you can always challenge yourself by improving the CI systems at the core of our process, experimenting and introducing new languages and design patterns and even chipping in to our IOS app or API code! It's not unusual for our engineers to step outside of their scope to help the whole team grow and get better.

And since we have many scrums in the team, it's also not uncommon for engineers to have experience across different scrum teams where they can learn about different parts of the product.

Agoda puts engineering and product at the front and centre of the business. That's even more true of the mobile team, where, more and more, new strategic projects start with the app. You will get to work on lots of cool stuff and important business decisions are made right here.

If that's the kind of team you want to join, let's talk!

Agoda is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status or disability status.
