Software Engineer - Front End at Uber (San Francisco, CA)

We’re changing the way people think about transportation. Not that long ago we were just an app to request premium black cars in a few metropolitan areas. Now we’re a part of the logistical fabric of more than 600 cities around the world. Whether it’s a ride, a sandwich, or a package, we use technology to give people what they want, when they want it.

For the people who drive with Uber, our app represents a flexible new way to earn money. For cities, we help strengthen local economies, improve access to transportation, and make streets safer.

And that’s just what we’re doing today. We’re thinking about the future, too. With teams working on new modalities, self-driving cars and even urban air transportation, we’re in for the long haul. We’re reimagining how people and things move from one place to the next.

About the Role:

You’ll create and maintain experiences across some of our 300+ web frontend properties. You’ll have the opportunity to impact our core ridesharing business, as well as emerging products like UberEATS, Uber Freight, mapping and self-driving cars.  This team focuses on providing a high-performance, secure and reliable web ecosystem for all of our users (riders, drivers, eaters and our internal operations & logistics teams).

About You:

  • Web Technologies. You’ve built side projects or professionally utilize the latest stacks and libraries such as Node.js, React, Angular, LESS, SASS, ES2015, CoffeeScript, etc. You are excited by the amazing pace that the web continues to evolve. You seek new methods and tools to make great websites faster and better, both on the front-end and back-end.
  • Bias towards action. You believe that speed and quality can be achieved at the same time. You’ve shown good judgement, shipping as fast as possible, products that are built in a responsible and sustainable way. You’re willing to make mistakes along the way and make sure you learn from them.
  • Make teams better. You can easily lead a team to the finish line or go deep on a huge challenge. You work well in fast moving teams and have no problem working with others to solve difficult problems. You support your team as much as your team supports you.
  • Service. Your top priority is satisfying the client.  It doesn’t matter what, how, or why something has gone wrong, you’ll jump in and take ownership of problems that might not even be in your team’s scope to ensure the customer is always getting the best experience possible.

Back End Internet Software Developer at Orases (Frederick, MD)

We aren’t ‘fast-paced’ like Wall Street but we do work smart in finding solutions to our clients problems, quickly.

We didn’t invent a new software language that is considered ‘cutting edge technology’ but we did create our own kick-ass development framework on top of CakePHP (and who doesn’t like cake?) that we build everything on.

We don’t have ‘an urgent need’ to find a developer, no one left, but we are growing and we’ll take our time to find the RIGHT developer.

Our ‘team-spirit’ can sometimes be cheesy but hey, we like each other and if we hire you, we like you too so you’ll get used to it.

We really are ‘fun’. We have catered lunches, happy hours, kitchen snacks and fun company excursions because, well again, we like each other and like to have fun! You might even get your desk pranked while you’re on vacation or get your very own character drawn on the chalkboard walls.

We code mostly in CakePHP, using MVC Patterns and MySQL but what we are most concerned with is that you have a strong (yes really, don’t just say you do because our guys are good and can tell from talking to you) working knowledge of Object Oriented Programming. If you’re solid there we can teach you the rest.

Version Control, Bootstrap, Foundation or other responsive frameworks along with JavaScript, HTML 5 and CSS are all bonuses as well.

We have flexible work hours and rarely ever work overtime -- work/life balance is extremely important to us.

Our developers are ‘self-motivated’ and ‘self-directed’ but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have processes it just means that you will have ownership and accountability for what you do.

Our developers are smart and curious; they want to learn and grow. If that describes you, you'll fit right in!

Skills & Requirements

Required:

  • B.S. in Computer Science or equivalent work experience

  • 6+ Years Internet development industry experience

  • Expert OOP (PHP preferred)

  • Advanced MVC (CakePHP preferred)

  • Advanced SQL (MySQL preferred, should be able to work as DBA)

  • Version Control (SVN or Git)

  • Working Knowledge in HTML/CSS/JS

Extras:

  • Bootstrap

  • jQuery or similar JS framework

  • Photoshop

This is a full-time, on-site position. Orases is accepting only accepting applications from those candidates that are currently authorized to work on-site in the USA.

Note: this description is intended to give you a general overview of the position and is not an exhaustive listing of duties and responsibilities.

Intermediate Data Engineer at ezyVet (London, UK)

WHAT IS THIS OPPORTUNITY ALL ABOUT?

As Intermediate Data Engineer you will be primarily focused with converting, manipulating and sanitising large data from a range of data sources (MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL etc). You will be heavily involved in automation efforts with an end goal of having a completely automated process. You will be constantly working on optimising low level PHP code and database queries to reduce the resource consumption required to convert large data sets.

You need to be someone experienced who has the vision and answers for other developers to look up to and be challenged and excited about what is possible. This role and mission will be no mean feat so you will need plenty of gas in the tank and a great toolbox of ideas and tricks to get the outcomes the platform will need in the future to be successful.

WHAT YOUR TYPICAL DAY WOULD LOOK LIKE?

Arrive at our newly renovated office, grab yourself a coffee with a few fellow team members, and sling a bit of banter around.

Review a few comments from the New Zealand based conversion team and run a few small scripts for them.

Attend the daily stand up to discuss current challenges, wins and goals you are going to achieve for the day.

Continue coding the latest script you will be utilising to convert data from competitors software into ezyVet.

Mid way through the day, give your mechanical keyboard and gaming mouse a chance to cool down and enjoy some well deserved lunch with a side of mildly witty banter.

Be a savior by providing rapid support to your appointed globally operating on-site implementation buddy when they are in need of a data superstar.

Continue working through automating the tooling by utilising cutting edge technology (i.e. Lambda, machine learning, AI etc).

Sit back and admire your latest performance improvement as GBs of data flow through your AWS spot instance.

Once you're done for the day; throw down (careful now) a challenge to your global team on slack and watch as the threads brim with excitement as they pick up what you've thrown down.

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE (THE BORING BITS):

  • At least 2 years commercial development experience

  • Proven person of action & delivery focused

  • Detail orientated

  • Experience with OO languages - i.e. PHP, Java, C#, C++

  • Strong experience with databases - i.e. MySQL, MSSQL, PostgreSQL

  • Strong OO design patterns, modular design

  • Strong attention to detail with relentless follow up

  • Excited by the idea of GBs of data flowing through at light speed

  • Extra: an understanding of the AWS platform
