Systems Engineer (SRE) at Intercom (Dublin 2, Ireland)

The world’s first customer platform helping internet businesses accelerate growth

Intercom builds a suite of messaging-first products that all modern internet businesses can use to accelerate growth across the customer lifecycle, from acquisition, to engagement, and support. Today more than 25,000 businesses, including New Relic, Sotheby’s, and Shopify, use Intercom to connect with a billion unique people worldwide.

Intercom is a deeply creative company with the confidence to believe it can fundamentally change the future of internet business. Our people are incredibly ambitious, yet humble. Warm, accepting, and positive. Whether you build, market, sell or support product, we want you to make your mark with us.

What's the opportunity?

As we continue to grow and scale we‘re looking for experienced systems engineers to join us and help build out, evolve and maintain our infrastructure and operations. This is a great opportunity to have significant impact and own projects of all shapes and sizes that will change how we go about running our infrastructure and operations.

You will have regular opportunity and support for career growth in a company that is continuing its own massive growth. We are constantly growing and forming new teams. For those who are motivated to lead, we bias towards internal transfers to management roles. This is a position suitable for technical managers considering a return to a full-time engineering role.

What will I be doing?

  • You will be evolving our architecture to use modern cloud technologies. We’re already 100% based in the cloud, but we want to take advantage of new capabilities - for example, migrating Intercom from Virtual Machines to Serverless or Container technologies.

  • You will work as part of a team that practices HumanOps. We optimise to operate our people, not our technology. Our team does not have mandatory out-of-hours on call - we participate in an opt-in out-of-hours on call rotation spread across all of our engineering organisation

  • You will ship a change to production on your first day and demo a significant feature to the company in your first week. That “day one” change is automatically deployed to production along with 100 other deployments every day

  • You care about agility as much you care for scalability and availability. Continuously deploying keeps us focused on incremental improvements. Even our biggest technical achievements roll out piece by piece. Projects are kept short and tightly scoped. Teams build a weekly cadence of releases

  • Public speaking, blogging, open source contributions and community participation is something we strongly encourage, and reward. We run regular internal and external events to share how we think and how we go about building great systems and products

  • Be proud of what you work on and obsess about the quality of the work you produce. Join us to do the best work of your career

What skills do I need?

  • You can demonstrate significant impact that your work has had, both on the technology side as well as with the teams you’ve been part of

  • You have a good working knowledge of at least one high-level programming language (for example, Ruby, Python, Go or Perl) - it doesn’t need to be a language that we use here

  • You have experience working with cloud infrastructure and owned business-critical infrastructure and services

What happens when I apply?

First, apply so we can review your CV :) As the next step, we will send you our take home test to work on in your own time. Next up is a phone interview with one of our engineers which will focus on technical and culture contribution questions (this is sometimes broken down into 2 interviews). Finally, we do an onsite interview in our Dublin office (we can help with travel arrangements, visas etc.).

Benefits

We are a well treated bunch, with awesome benefits! If there’s something important to you that’s not on this list, talk to us! :)

  • Competitive salary and equity in a fast-growing start-up

  • We serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner every weekday. There are also snacks and drinks on tap to keep you topped up

  • Regular compensation reviews - we reward great work!

  • Peace of mind with life assurance, as well as comprehensive health and dental insurance for you and your dependents

  • Open vacation policy and flexible holidays so you can take time off when you need it

  • Paid maternity leave, as well as 6 weeks paternity leave for fathers, to let you spend valuable time with your loved ones

  • Commuting is a breeze with our generous public transport allowance

  • Keep active with our wellness programme that allows you to expense gym and other sports activities up to €90 quarterly

  • If you’re cycling, we’ve got you covered on the Cycle-to-Work Scheme. With secure bike storage too

  • MacBooks are our standard, but we’re happy to get you whatever equipment helps you get your job done

  • We also offer generous relocation assistance for certain roles for people joining us from overseas

We are a diverse bunch of people and we want to continue to attract and retain a diverse range of people into our organisation. We're committed to an inclusive and diverse Intercom! We do not discriminate based on gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, civil or family status, age, disability, or race.

Remote Senior full-stack javascript developer (React/Node.js) at Aula () (allows remote)

Summary
“The engineering world is going remote - but the most interesting engineering challenges and the professional development support often stay in HQ.

At Aula, we're remote-first and deeply focused on developing our people.”

Job to be done: Be a core part of part of Aula’s engineering team working full-stack, end-to-end on features that will make a difference for students and educators. Consumer tech frontend, complex infrastructure backend.
The tools you’ll use: React, React-Native, microservices in Node.js, Docker, AWS, Redux, Mongo.
What is Aula: Remote-first 20-person startup (from 10 nationalities!) building digital campuses for universities - think 'Slack for education'. We recently raised $4.2m.

About you ‍‍
We’re excited to tell you about Aula and what we’re working on, but first of all, let us explain who we’re looking for.

Traits we value:

  • Collaborative spirit

  • Curiosity: excited about exploring and learning.

  • Mission-driven: you care deeply about building great products that affect people’s lives.

  • You are excited about joining a 20-person startup with all the ups, downs and ownership that entails.

  • Transparency, reliability and considerateness.

Experience we value:

  • You have both front-end and back-end experience

  • You have experience with React - unless you have significant Javascript experience with other libraries

  • You have experience iterating on products from end-to-end (full feature)

  • You live within GMT-5 and GMT+5.5 for us to be awake at the same time

The role

We’re looking for a seasoned full-stack developer that can build features across the entire stack (front-end, back-end, mobile) and challenge our thinking on architecture. Here’s a snapshot of what you’ll be working on

  • Be part of leading a high-performing team: inspiring team members, set priorities and own results

  • Building backend microservices

  • Pushing our thinking on core architecture choices

  • Working directly with Adrian, CPO and designer, to build, maintain and improve slick user interfaces across devices

  • Switching between different apps and devices (web, desktop, iOS, Android)

  • Improving and maintaining our distributed architecture

Benefits

  • Personal development is part of being 'a high performer'. Each quarter, you'll set targets for your own personal development.

  • Shared ownership: Joining the Aula journey means you will own part of the company.

  • Technology: Get hooked up with the technology you need to do your best work.

  • Free books: Whatever you want to read. We're building up an Aula library

  • Family leave: We offer enhanced family leave, no matter if you're the one giving birth or not - and a commitment to open, continuous communication.

  • Flexible working: We’re flexible about when and where you work a lot of the time

About us
Aula is a communication platform for education. Think ‘Slack for education’: consumer tech on the front-end yet complex infrastructure on the back-end. We’ve built Aula because we believe digital learning infrastructure should encourage community and participation-based learning.

For students, this means less one-way communication from the teacher, more collaboration with fellow students (using integrations with tools like GitHub and codepen) and easier access to student services like the welfare team - even if you’re commuting or are away from campus on a placement. We’ve recently raised a $4.2m seed round and some people think we’re worth watching out for.

Our team

We’re a diverse bunch of people from all over the world (Denmark, Philippines, France, Albania, Georgia, Pakistan, Sweden, India, UK and US) that care deeply about making educational experiences more engaging.

Our engineers have previously lead teams that have built things like the Georgian version of Youtube (myvideo.ge with 2.5 million monthly unique viewers) and a novel way to share and view 3D medical images (TissueStack).

You’ll be working closely with Oliver, our CTO, so we thought we’d put a face on him.

.NET developer: LOGISTICS at ICT Group (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

What is the best invention since the wheel? We were suddenly able to do so much more, so much more quickly. Can we still surpass that? Well, not yet perhaps. But we can keep coming up with ideas to maximise use and benefit. The scale at which items are transported now will only increase in the future. To do this successfully, oversight, safety and clarity are therefore mandatory. How can we contribute to this? Software! This is very important. You, the software developer, are essential to this process. After all, you and your team are the ones that keep things running.
The accompanying projects are something for which you and your code will be responsible. Examples include the Rotterdam harbours and the container transport there, mission-critical systems and other challenges. You will constantly have new challenges to face.

There is nothing more annoying than departing from Rotterdam with a ship packed full of containers, only to realise later that you are missing one or two containers. These are expensive mistakes, which is why attention to detail and quality are priorities at Transport & Logistiek ICT, as is the automation of container terminals. For example, software that handles automatic loading and unloading of containers onto and from the ship. This process is increasingly performed automatically and you can play an important role here, for terminals in both Rotterdam and abroad.
You'll be using state-of-the-art technology to accomplish this. For example, automatic container recognition using Vision and precise positioning systems for Automatic Guided Vehicles (AGV). Planning, coordination and management of cranes, AGVs and other equipment are very important to allow a container terminal to function efficiently and will only become more relevant in the coming years. ICT has been involved in the development of this type of software for many years and has built up a lot of knowledge and experience in this field, which we're eager to look at with you and combine with your own software knowledge and experience.

Your daily tasks include:

  • As a software engineer, you plan complex logistical software solutions.

  • You also maintain the engineered software solutions.

  • You draw up the user requirements together with the customer.

  • You plan the work activities and coordinate progress with the project manager.

  • You also act as a technical point of contact for customers and team members.

  • You work with our customers on site.

Requirements

If you meet the requirements below, we'd love to get in touch with you.

  • Completed Bachelors or Masters degree in IT or a technical field.

  • At least 3 years of recent work experience with C# and MSSQL and preferably Azure as well.

  • Excellent knowledge of English

  • Motivated, flexible, willing to travel and responsible

  • EU Citizen living in the Netherlands or willing to move to the Netherlands, we will help you with your relocation (read more info about this below)

  • In possession of a valid driving licence.

  • You will think creatively and your suggestions about new features and ideas we’ll be considered by other members of the team.

  • You will have direct access to customers and be able to iterate on your features based on their feedback.

  • You’ll be working with modern technologies like React, Node.js, MongoDB, Docker, and Kubernetes.

  • You will learn a lot along the way, diving into new technologies and the world of computer vision both on your own and during frequent company tech talks.

What you’ll bring to the table

  • You have a strong handle on modern JavaScript development, even if you don’t know every single JS quirk.

  • You are a self starter who can prioritize what to work on and fully design, build, and write tests for new features.
