Engineering Manager at StyleSeat (San Francisco, CA)

At StyleSeat, our mission is to help people look and feel their best. We are on the path to achieving this mission by being the go-to portal for consumers to discover, book, and pay for beauty and grooming services (hair stylists, colorists, nail artists, estheticians, barbers, etc). We are also the premier solution for all independent professionals in the industry to run and grow their business. We have powered over 120 million appointments booked and $10B in revenue for small businesses and are on the path to much more.

Our leaders are just as involved in the code as they are with mentoring their team to make StyleSeat the very best place to work. We have a strong value-based culture that serves our community, gives every individual ownership and is diverse.

  • Being an engineer means: daily releases, clear ownership, constant learning, data driven decision-making, great partnership with product, serving millions of customers everyday. Every single engineer makes a huge impact on our customers and the company’s growth.

  • We use Python/Django with React. We always try to use the right tool for the job. Examples of other technology we use: Cordova, AWS, ECS, MySQL, Redshift, ElasticSearch, RabbitMQ, Redis, Celery, Docker.

  • We are building an A+ engineering team. We are looking for world class engineering leaders who are proven multipliers who have led teams to do more by working smarter. You have excellent technical and mentoring skills; you help the team make sound architectural decisions, improve delivery velocity, improve product quality, and provide career growth to our highly driven staff..

  • Our engineers work in small fullstack agile squads where each team has clear KPIs that they are responsible for. You will be part of the engineering leadership team and start as an engineer to get your hands in the code so you know how things work and what needs to be optimized.

    Ideal Candidate:

    • Experienced engineer - Engineers look up to you for technical guidance and advice. Everyone in engineering must pass our coding interview and start as an engineer initially to get familiar with the code base and engineering process. You have expertise and insight to raise the bar and help us to continuously improve in our technology stack.

    • You lead by example and shape the culture of the company.

    • Pragmatic - Help us evaluate when to adopt process to scale efficiently while also allowing us to move quickly and iterate.

    • 2+ years of people management experience including performance, career pathing, interviewing, and retaining top and diverse talent.

    • Scale - experience in scaling products to massive adoption; guide the team to minimize growing pain with scalable architecture and code base

    • We win as a team. You love to mentor engineers and help them achieve more than what they thought possible. Your team knows what is expected of them and you can provide frequent, direct and constructive feedback

    • Product IQ - We work in 2 week sprints with rapid iterations. You are not given pixel perfect design to implement. You will be co-creating your products with designers, product managers, and the data team

  • Context - you provide clear context on why and what to do and not to do. You guide and support the team towards company’s common goals; not with top down command and control

  • Engineering Excellence - nurture engineering excellence with continuous improvement and best practices, reusable and scalable code base, strong design/code review culture with high test coverage and automation, high availability and performance

  • You have experience mentoring both developers and quality engineers in producing the best possible product on time.
