In our data-driven environment, new ideas are always put to test, ideally in randomized,  controlled A/B Experiments. However, many interventions require different approaches, for example because we influence existing defined groups instead of truly randomized groups, or we compare different markets to each other.

To approach such challenges, you get creative with many of the following ideas: quasi-experimental designs, adaptive testing designs, penal studies, causal inference techniques, and many more. You will setup, analyze and ultimately validate parametric and nonparametric tests, bayesian methods, correction methods (e.g., propensity scores), hierarchical models, etc., for many different use cases.

Our product development teams leverage data to provide our customers with the best possible experience on our site. They work on challenging problems from understanding and predicting market data, to ranking all properties on our website, and providing our customers with the most relevant personalized recommendations.

As a Data Scientist, you will work side-by-side with Developers, Designers and Product Owners, and take full ownership of your work, from the initial idea-generation phase, to the implementation of the final product on our website. You are result-focused, innovative and have a solid quantitative background and a good business understanding.

  • Research & Development on how to improve customers’ experience, by using our vast amounts of data

  • Actively contribute to taking Data Science at Booking.com to the next level

  • Contribute to the growth of Booking.com through interviewing, on-boarding, or other recruitment efforts

B.skilled

  • Minimum two years of relevant work experience

  • Masters, PhD, or equivalent experience in a quantitative field (Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, etc.)

  • Broad knowledge of experimental designs, potential pitfalls and troubleshooting as well as experience with designing, validating and running experimental setups, preferably at large scale

  • Familiarity with the frequentist philosophy in probability theory as well as the bayesian approach

  • Good working knowledge of statistical theory, test theory, and estimator properties

  • Familiarity with most of the following ideas: Sequential testing, mixed models, GLM, GEE, repeated measurements designs, type m-error, type s-error, and variance reduction techniques (e.g. CUPED)

Required

  • Experience with coding and statistical analysis in languages such as R, Python, Perl, C/C++, Java, Scala

Software Developer at Solar Technology Inc. () (allows remote)

You’ll be joining a small team which develops and maintains a collection of embedded products, server support software, and desktop control software. Though you will work closely with other team members, this position will grow to provide substantial independent responsibilities and a rewarding career.

Your development responsibilities will be varied, and include:

  • Using Java and some C/C++ to develop the software that controls our Linux-based variable message signs.

  • Using Java to develop features in the server control software which oversees thousands of message boards, arrow boards, and other equipment.

  • Developing programs on embedded Linux systems to support remote sensors such as radar, queue detectors, etc.

  • Developing programs which run in our server cluster and remotely read data from sensors, cameras, and other data sources directly connected to the internet.

  • Occasionally developing microcontroller firmware for resource constrained 8-bit and 32-bit embedded devices (display modules, charge controller, etc.)

The languages we use are Java, C, C++, Python, and Perl. The ideal candidate will have experience with Java or at least an object-oriented programming language with native types (e.g. C++), higher level languages (e.g. Perl, Python), and the ability to quickly learn new languages, libraries, and tools. The ability to communicate effectively with non-programmers is a requirement.

As many of our products run embedded linux and our development environment is Linux based, experience with Linux will be very helpful. We use git for version control and Jira for issue tracking, and HipChat for communication within the development team, including (typically brief) daily meetings.

All candidates must be eligible to reside and work in the US. We strongly prefer residence within 300 miles of the factory in Allentown, PA.

Senior Full Stack Developer at NorthOne (Toronto, ON, Canada)

We make small businesses more successful through better banking.

NorthOne is looking for a Senior Full Stack Developer to join our team as we enter a new phase of product development. We are a Toronto and Montreal-based, venture-backed, early-stage startup at the heart of the FinTech movement that is shaping the way financial services are delivered.

We are a team that values diversity and inclusivity. Excellence doesn't come in one flavour and neither should we.

Our story

Our company’s purpose is to eliminate the pain that small business owners face through their financial management and banking. To achieve this, we’re re-imaging business banking from the ground up. Imagine you could start with a clean slate and think of a different way to deliver banking to small businesses. What would you change? What would you keep? These are the decisions that we make every day.

Our product

NorthOne is building a mobile-first, API-enabled banking platform serving startups and small business (SMBs). Given the impact that poor financial literacy and controllership has on SMB failure rates and costs, we're building a banking platform whose very mission is to eliminate these problems. As such, we are not only their bank, but also the tech-forward Finance Department SMBs could never afford. To do so, we've partnered up with a fully-licensed bank in order to create a new business banking option for Canadian businesses.

Our team

We product. Thoughtful and rigorous product development makes us giddy. That’s why when it comes to product, everybody plays in the orchestra. We’ve got a lead UX designer, a lead developer, and a Sr. Technical advisor who used to be the chief architect of a large Canadian bank. Our COO has helped build digital products used by companies like Frank and Oak, Supercell, MachineZone, BMO, and Trivago. Oh, and our CEO? 5 years at McKinsey working on digital customer experience in financial services and self-taught in UX design and predictive modeling. We’re building a product that solves real pain, vs the imagined kind. Feeling it?

REQUIREMENTS

Today you might be a Developer, Software Engineer, or the equivalent in your company...or something that we haven’t heard of yet - we keep an open mind.

The most important characteristic for a Developer joining our team is your attitude. We want you to join because you don't see roadblocks, you see opportunities to be at your best. You know that somehow, you and the rest of our team can figure anything out.

These team skills that will make you successful in this role (note that this comes before all else):

  • You get your hands dirty: You are comfortable diving into new projects, exploring other’s code, or lending your PoV to a product management meeting. Whatever it is, you like to stretch outside your swimlane.

  • You’re curious: You’re excited about the bleeding edge of tech without being dogmatic about any language or framework and are excited to passionately share your views with us.

  • You get that tech is a team sport: You understand that learning from and teaching other great developers makes the whole team better.

  • You’re mission first: You get stuff done and you don’t let anything get in the way of moving our product forward.

The skills that will make you successful in this role:

  • Getting things done:

    • Required: Expert knowledge in at least one modern programming language, experience with relational and nonrelational databases, worked with complex and secure server architectures (e.g., distributed, stateless), deep knowledge of API protocols, developed web or mobile applications based on technical and functional specs, mobile app development experience (bonus points if you’ve used React Native).

    • Nice to have: Dev ops experience, you’ve worked with AWS (e.g., Redshift, IAM) and understand how to build secure systems and applications, NodeJS, mobile UX design, system architecture.

  • Getting things done efficiently: You’re an agile practitioner who loves SCRUM.

  • Getting things done safely: Worked on systems containing secure / sensitive client data.

  • Getting things done with others: Led partner integrations (e.g., custom, standardized).

*** We strongly encourage you to submit your GitHub account (or similar) along with your application***

Experiences and stories you can tell us around the campfire:

  • Participating in a scoping process for a pre-production software application

  • Working on a production system with a regular release cycle, including mobile applications

  • Shipping one or more software applications

  • Working on a major refactor of a software application

  • Contributions to an open source project

  • Planning for crises, working through them when they were unavoidable

Few people have been trained for this sort of role. If you are this close to what we’ve described, but aren’t sure, apply. Let’s figure out together if this is where you could shine.

BENEFITS

Our mission is big and audacious, but we're assembling a team to take the challenge head on.

You'll be joining a strong team, and you'll contribute to our success across all parts of the company:

  • People: Our company is more than just a business. We’re a band of brothers and sisters supporting each other on our mission to rebuild business banking. We’re really serious about mission, fit, and the people we work with. You’ve worked as part of a scalable technical organization that reflects these values and keeps this place special.

  • Product: People are trusting us with their money. We don’t take this responsibility lightly. You’re building a product that is as secure and dependable as it is beautiful and ingenious.

  • Technology ownership: You’re right in the thick of it, making critical technical decisions that will move us forward. You’re a blend of Geordie Laforge, Diane Greene, and Tony Stark.

We offer full health/dental benefits, competitive compensation/equity, and one hell of an adventure.

If you're up for the challenge, let's talk.
