What You Bring Along:



  • You are comfortable coding in Java, conversant in the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs, as well as newer features like lambdas.

  • Experience securing applications and knowledge of security protocols.

  • You've worked on open source projects before and are familiar with different styles of source control workflow and continuous integration.

WHAT’S YOUR MISSION?



  • Develop the platform to provide a scalable infrastructure and own the intelligent search technology to facilitate ground-breaking discoveries. Some example projects are:

  • Developing our drug discovery platform.

  • Extending and managing the world’s largest biomedical knowledge graph.

  • Productizing and serving AI models built for drug discovery.

  • Getting involved in microservice-style web services, database servers, graph data structures, all of which are deployed onto our Kubernetes cluster.

  • Ensure Agile best practice are followed and the software is resilient enough for our scientists to rely upon.

  • Pioneer the creation of leading database servers, graph data structures, distributed computing and data repositories (mixture of local development servers and cloud).

  • Advocate high-quality engineering and best-practice in production software, automation as well as rapid prototypes as a part of Agile multi-functional squads.

  • Iterate rapidly based on user feedback and experiment with different ideas, without losing sight of engineering quality.

  • Be pragmatic and flexible - adapting your approach to work on hackathons, MVPs and long lived products.

  • Be willing to share and champion your opinion on technical direction, and contribute to the mix of ideas.



WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?



  • You have completed a degree in Computer science (BSc/MSc/PhD) or related academic discipline.

  • Computer Science or related academic background.

  • Experience in commercial environment as a software engineer or relevant roles.

  • Proven track records for building complex applications, dealing with complex data, and delivering user experiences with attention to code quality and testing.

  • Extra credits to published front-end or visualization work, experience with DevOps, and experience in fields related to drug discovery.

  • You must be a strong communicator who can explain what is required to build and deliver great software products, as well as a great team player willing to listen to other colleagues concerns and freely raise your own.

  • Experience in a range of technologies. The willingness to be flexible and humble matters more to us than evangelism over set technologies, however a robust knowledge of some of these is needed:

  • Backend: Python + flask, Java 8 + Spring, Microservices architecture, SQL/NoSQL/Graph Databases, REST APIs, GraphQL

Junior PHP Developer - Games Platform at Kognito (New York, NY)

Our team of 75+ people includes game designers, software engineers, psychologists, graphic artists, and writers.


Kognito is seeking a talented PHP Developer to join our growing research and development team. The ideal candidate is capable of learning a complex proprietary codebase and keeping pace with an experienced team. You'll be developing and maintaining the infrastructure behind all our web and mobile games, as well as various internal tools. You will work across the full LAMP stack and through the whole development cycle of projects.


Primary Responsibilities:



  • Ensure the operation of all our live services.

  • Assist with meeting requirements for a diverse set of clients, including internal tools for the game development team.

  • Work with our QA team to ensure maximum stability, performance and quality. Write your own documentation and automated tests.

  • Plan deployments and launches for projects.

  • Move the company to a services-based infrastructure as we scale up to serve our games on any platform, anywhere, anytime for millions of users.


The ideal new team member should be ready to work in a group of equals or independently. We're excited to hear your ideas about app design, project implementation, and which new technologies you think are worth investigating.


Skills & Experience:



  • Fullstack LAMP development, including being comfortable on the UNIX/Linux command line, writing your own MySQL queries, and dealing with Apache configuration files (e.g. vhost & .htaccess files)

  • Experience with object-oriented PHP, preferably including Laravel and PHPUnit

  • Ability to write HTML/CSS/JS in line with W3C standards

  • Familiarity with jQuery, jQuery Mobile, Vue.js, and Bootstrap

  • Excellent written and oral English skills

  • Experience with a distributed version control system like Mercurial or GIT

  • CS degree, or equivalent work experience, and projects exemplifying your work


Nice to Haves:



  • Experience with packaging and automation technologies such as composer, npm, grunt, gulp, yarn, bower, etc.

  • Familiarity with Rackspace hosting infrastructure

  • Familiarity with the Unity game engine
