Cloud Engineer at Coolblue (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

As a cloud engineer you bring Coolblue's cloud platform to the next level by making sure it's easy to deploy and maintain, while also building new services.

Pros and cons

  • + You maintain and standardize our deployment pipelines, so the developers can release their applications smoothly and reliably.
  • + You make it easy for development teams to create their infrastructure as code for our AWS cloud environment.
  • + You will enable and empower developers to follow best practices while deploying their applications.
  • + You automate recurring tasks to make your job (and that of the developers) easier.
  • - You need to keep up with the latest news for the pubquiz.

Description

You start the day with the stand-up and together with your teammates you make a plan for the next 24 hours. After that, its time to grab some coffee and get your brain pumping to refine and brainstorm user stories that will improve the Cloud Platform and Developer Experience. You pair up with a teammate to create new extension points for CloudFormation resources to support automation around the platform. Phew, its lunch time ready to grab some fresh food from the Coolblue canteen!

After lunch, two developers join the room asking for advice on how their new application can make use of DynamoDB auto-scaling and how to architect a serverless stack. You join the discussion and give them pointers of how to achieve this.

Later, you pick up a story about improving the automation around CI/CD pipelines. You pivot the solution together with two development teams to accelerate and optimize the speed and quality of deployments.

Your specifications

  • You have some experience working with any cloud environment, preferably AWS.
  • You get bonus points if you have experience working with Scrum.

Included by default

Senior Delphi Developer at Coolblue (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

As a Delphi Developer you will optimize all processes happening behind the scenes at Coolblue.

Pros and cons

  • + You interact with developers and end users to reach the best software solution.
  • + You make decisions based on measured results and experiences. To measure is to know.
  • + You help to improve the development process.
  • - You need to keep up with the latest news for the pubquiz.

Description

After youve had your first cup of coffee, you think of how customers might be able to pick up their package from our stores even sooner. By cleverly grouping products, you ensure that the number of actions needed to pack internal deliveries is halved. Fortunately, you can continue to use a system that was already developed in a previous sprint, so it doesnt take much effort to integrate this change into the system. And that way, youll also have it linked to external systems right away.

Around lunch time, you walk by Bart from Logistics, and tell him about the expected result. Hes very happy with your fast solution. You decide to have lunch together and discuss other logistical challenges. Bart tells you about a problem with 20 packages that are stuck somewhere in the process.

After lunch, you sit down with Wouter, one of your teammates, to find the cause. Found it! You can see that creating the multicollinearity packages is done a different way. When the solution is done tomorrow, you can put this in a release, so we can use the new solution right away.

Your specifications

  • You have extensive knowledge of, and experience with, Delphi.
  • You have demonstrable experience with Oracle or a similar database.
  • You have insight into the modeling of relational databases.
  • You have knowledge of the various development methods, best practices, algorithms, and design patterns.
  • Having an interest in other programming languages (C#), unit testing, or TDD is a plus.

'But my feeling is that even though working with a language considered outdated, we still see many cool things in the code, things that are more common to see on trending languages. And also, that i am not strictly bounded to a specific language, I am a Delphi Developer, but also develop some stuff in C#.

Senior PHP Developer at Coolblue (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

As a PHP Developer at Coolblue you will make sure our web shops are ridiculously fast and meticulously kept.

Pros and cons

  • + You make the website a little bit better every day.
  • + You coach your teammates and provide them with constructive feedback.
  • + You come up with new functionalities and actually build them.
  • - You have to respond to the pull requests of your colleagues.

Description Senior PHP Developer

Yesterday, while you were monitoring, you and your team noticed a possible edge case in the iDeal implementation that might hinder customers. Even though youre a PHP developer, you dont shy away from a few lines of C#, and you quickly have a pull request ready for the payment service. This will make a lot of customers happy. You tell the Customer Journey Specialist about it, so youll have some statistics ready tomorrow to check whether the contact with Customer Service regarding this bugs decreased.

After that, you dive back into PHP. A colleague from another team has a pull request ready to refactor the websites navigation structure and would like your opinion. After helping him for some time, you continue working on the goal that you agreed on with your team during the standup. We need an endpoint for the service that provides order information to the website to cancel an order. Better discuss with the team which approach works best.

Your specifications

  • You have at least 5 years of experience as a Software Developer.
  • PHP is your native language, but youre not bound by it.

Senior Data Scientist at Coolblue (Rotterdam, Netherlands)

As an Advanced Data Analyst / Data Scientist you use the data of millions of visitors to help Coolblue act smarter.

Pros and cons

  • + Youre going to be working as a true Data Scientist. One who understands why you get the results that you do and apply this information to other experiments.
  • + Youre able to use the right tools for every job.
  • + Your job starts with a problem and ends with you monitoring your own solution.
  • - You have to crawl underneath the foosball table when you lose a game.

Description Data Scientist

Your challenge in this sprint is improving the weekly sales forecasting models for the Christmas period. Your cross-validation strategy is ready, but before you can begin, you have to query the data from our systems and process them in a way that allows you to view the situation with clarity.

First, you have a meeting with Matthias, whos worked on this problem before. During your meeting, you conclude that Christmas has a non-linear effect on sales.  Thats why you decide to experiment with a multiplicative XGBoost in addition to your Regularised-Regression model. You make a grid with various features and parameters for both models and analyze the effects of both approaches. You notice your Regression is overfitting, which means XGBoost isnt performing and the forecast isnt high enough, so you increase the regularization and appoint the Christmas features to XGBoost alone.

Nice! You improved the precision of the Christmas forecast with an average of 2%. This will only yield results once the algorithm has been implemented, so you start thinking about how you want to implement this.

Your specifications

  • You have at least 4 years of experience in a similar function.
  • You have a university degree, MSC, or PHD in Mathematics, Computer Science, or Statistics.
  • You have experience with Machine Learning techniques, such as Gradient Boosting, Random Forest, and Neutral Networks, and you have proven experience with successfully applying these (or similar) techniques in a business environment.
  • You have some experience with Data mining, SQL, BigQuery, NoSQL, R, and monitoring.
  • You're highly knowledgeable about Python.
  • You have experience with Big Data technologies, such as Spark and Hadoop.

Included by default.

  • Money.
  • Travel allowance and a retirement plan.
  • 25 leave days. As long as you promise to come back.
  • A discount on all our products.
  • A picture-perfect office at a great location. You could crawl to work from Rotterdam Central Station. Though we recommend just walking for 2 minutes.
  • A horizontal organisation in the broadest sense. You could just go and have a beer with the boss.

Review

'I believe I'm working in a great team of enthusiastic and smart people, with a good mix of juniors and seniors. The projects that we work on are very interesting and diverse, think of marketing, pricing and recommender systems. For each project we try to use the latest research and machine learning techniques in order to create the best solutions. I like that we are involved in the projects start to end, from researching the problem to experimenting, to putting it in production, and to creating the monitoring dashboards and delivering the outputs on a daily basis to our stakeholders. The work environment is open, relaxed and especially fun'
