Senior Front-End Developer at Catawiki (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Catawiki’s purpose is to enable people to discover and obtain special objects that help them fulfil their passions. In doing so, we add some color & make the world a more interesting place!

Our Frontend story

When the site grew exponentially so did the need for properly structured Frontend. A major effort was spent modernizing our stack and properly structuring it so that it is scalable, maintainable and predictable. It has a nice balance in that we can iterate fast but still be confident on features/changes that we release. It is an ongoing process, so we constantly look into new ideas and ways on how to improve our stack every day.

Here’s Arek, one of our Engineers:

“I always wanted to have a job where it’s not only about coming to work because “I have to”, but also because I enjoy it and find it purposeful. Having so many talented people around and a direct impact on the experience of millions of our users - I can surely say that it’s finally possible! All of that in a fast-paced environment with a top-notch stack: React, TypeScript and the world of microservices.”

So what's the job

Working in a high traffic environment you will have the opportunity to build new features to grow the business and measure the impact. We are highly data-driven so A/B experimentation is at our core. You will be part of the frontend guild which is distributed across multiple teams consisting of a Product Owner, UX designer, backend and other frontend developers.

You will also work with the frontend guild on constantly maintaining and improving our infrastructure to keep the stack being scalable, maintainable and predictable. We are open to new and fresh ideas and you will have the opportunity to display them at our guild meetings where we openly discuss them.

How we roll - Our Stack

On most of the codebase, you will be working with TypeScript (our primary choice for writing Frontend code), React, Redux. Our code is built with Webpack. The code architecture is based on the Feature pattern and we are testing our code using Jest. For static content, we use Rails with Haml. We style our code using SCSS with the BEM methodology. The stack and architecture that we have right now has been chosen by many frontend developers spending a lot of time in our codebase. We think it works really well for us, but as with everything we are always up for new ideas.

We still have some parts of the code which are in our outdated stack. We are continuously working on migrating those to the preferred one. You'll move in sync with You will be part of one of the product teams. Given their domain (Search & Discovery, Payments, Onboarding etc.) you will work closely with all of the team members in sharing your expertise by explaining how/if things should be done and how will it affect the user experience.

A little about you

It's likely that you know how to explain a problem and a solution, both in detail to a technical crowd and in a simplified way to the not so technical folk. You know how to organize your time to be efficient without being overworked, and are calm and collected when a problem arises in production, and are great at prioritising your work. In addition, you have a proven track record in the following:

  • JavaScript and/or TypeScript - we can bring you up to speed with TypeScript

  • Experience with React or Vue is preferred Redux or any other state management tool

  • Styling while using the BEM methodology or any of the modern approaches with using PostCSS for CSSinJS, CSS modules etc.

Lead software developer .NET at funda (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

At funda, a Lead software developer .NET is so much more than just a team leader. Of course, you’re responsible for managing your team. But you’re also expected to roll up your sleeves and do some programming. While you’re getting the most out of your team, the driven Engineer within you is getting directly involved in the product.

So, what makes you a Lead? Your ability to work with each individual team member on his/her personal growth. You’ll be the working leader who sets the standard for development. In short: it’s the best of both worlds.

You have a critical voice in the platform’s architecture, design and development. So you directly contribute to creating the best user experience. It’s great to work on a high-traffic site that everyone  - including your friends, family and next-door neighbour – knows. But your future colleague Stephan can give you another good reason to apply: “You’ll be working in a growing business that uses modern technology like .NET Core and Docker.”

Your job

We believe that if you limit an Engineer’s activities to management alone, he/she will lose that essential technical focus. That’s why as a Lead software developer .NET at funda, you’re not a full-time manager. You’ll stay up to date in your field and contribute to developments on the platform. We know that’s quite a challenge. But you love a good challenge, don’t you?

Your team

You’ll manage a team of around 5 Engineers, from juniors to seniors. It’s your job to coach them. To help them get the best out of themselves and each other.

Your profile

You excel in software design or software architecture. But you have great social skills, too. And those will come in handy as you manage a team of Engineers that report directly to you. You have loads of experience in development and have managed a team before.

Some other things that will make you ideal for this role:

  • In addition to 5 years of relevant work experience, you’ve had a lead role for at least 1 year.

  • You bring experience with .NET Frameworks like .NET Core.

  • You have experience with search engines like Solr, Elasticsearch or other Lucene-based engines.

  • You know about modern software design and architecture (CQRS, event sourcing, microservices).

  • If you know your way around cloud services, that’s a plus.

We prefer applications from EU/EEA citizens, not in need of a working permit for The Netherlands.

This is what we offer

Funda offers you one of the most challenging jobs in your field. You’ll work in an amazing office in the heart of Amsterdam, with our own ‘funda square’ and an unobstructed view of the IJ river. You are within 2 tram stops of Amsterdam Central Station. That’s 5 minutes by bicycle or 10 minutes on foot. Whatever your pleasure.

You’ll be working with more than 120 great (international) minds, who will make you feel at home from the start. To us, it’s only logical to take good care of our talents, and therefore of you. If you come work to with us, we offer you:

  • An excellent salary with an annual bonus scheme and 25 days off (you can buy more days if you need them).

  • Flexible work hours.

  • Reimbursements for your telephone, home internet, travel expenses, gym and part of your pension.

  • Heavenly chair massages 6 times a year (during work hours).

  • Chef-prepared fresh lunch every day, ranging from soups to salads, fresh bread rolls from the baker and a snack every Friday.

  • Dinners, team outings, drinks and a birthday present.

  • The opportunity to follow courses, congresses and classes. Because at funda, we believe that you’ve never learned enough. Also, you can get your creative juices flowing during our hackathons.

Interested?

We like to act swiftly at funda. So here’s what you can expect from us:

Get started
You can apply by sending your résumé and cover letter (or video) via the application button.

Hooray! Going to the next round? Then our Corporate Recruiters will invite you for a telephone screening.

And then...
If you have passed the telephone screening, we will schedule that first job interview with you as soon as possible. You can expect a maximum of 2 rounds of interviews.

To case or not to case
For this vacancy a code exercise will be part of the Recruitment process.

JavaScript Developer (small company, in-house product, ambitious plans!) at FLG (Manchester, UK)

*** No agencies or recruitment companies please - we'll get in touch if we need your assistance ***

Who we are

FLG is a CRM focused on workflow to automate and control processes. Our customers rely on us to make sure nothing is missed, and no opportunity is left behind.

We've been in business for 12 years and have built up a great reputation and a loyal user base. We're proud of our Trustpilot rating of 4.7 / 5.

We're based in Ancoats, Manchester, in Beehive Lofts; an inspiring coworking location in a stylish listed building.

The challenge

CRM is a competitive space, and to stay ahead, we have to be on top of our technical game. We're working on building whole new feature groups into our platform. Recently we've added a drag & drop, multi-page data collection feature, telephony integrations, and appointment booking flows. Take a look at our changelog for the details. We’re also working hard to ensure our platform is fit for purpose and will support our growth ambitions. We’ve got big plans for 2020 to modernise our core platform and need a great team to help us do that whilst keeping the product moving forward for our customers.

We’re looking for a number of JavaScript developers with broad technical skills across the stack (particularly in SaaS/web app development), who will fit into our team, communicate well, and enjoy getting things done.

How we work

We're a small team where everyone contributes and all voices are heard. We have a  product manager, business analyst and are looking to expand the team to 6 developers.

Our focus is on working iteratively, getting working software into customer hands as early as we can and making sensible technical decisions without bureaucracy.

We're small enough for everyone to speak to customers and we take every opportunity to invite product feedback. Our latest mechanism is our feedback site.

We’ve got a brand new lead software developer to help guide our ambitious plans in 2020 and beyond.

Technology stack

Our latest features are built using React/Express and hosted at AWS. Our legacy stack is a LAMP stack hosted on bare metal servers. We use a messaging bus and APIs to connect our 2 platforms together, but customers see the 2 platforms as one product. A major project is underway to phase out the legacy stack and unify around a single tech stack.

Here’s an overview of our new stack:

  • JavaScript / TypeScript / ReactJS Frontend

  • DynamoDB, Redis, MySQL, ElasticSearch, S3

  • Gitlab for workflow and CI/CD

During the platform migration there may be a need for you to read and understand the logic of some PHP and Flow code.

Is this for you?

We've put together a list of technical and soft skills we're looking for.

Communication skills

Be able to communicate effectively and clearly, developing rapport with others in the business, giving clear updates on projects, etc.

Work collaboratively and seek the timely opinions of colleagues and customers so you build the right things. Always focused on solving a customer problem.

Team centric

Be easy and supportive to work with and always ready to help colleagues when they need it. As a small team sometimes it’s all hands to the pump on the rare occasions things don’t go to plan.

Technical skills

A skilled JavaScript developer with experience across the stack using TypeScript in modern frontend and backend frameworks.

Be able to acquire a good understanding of our code base, the design patterns, how they operate, the architecture, etc.

Make reasoned, pragmatic, technical decisions quickly, and support colleagues doing the same. Be commercially aware and keep things simple.

Be proactive

To raise ideas in the team about how we can improve our products, processes, and practices. For example, make process improvement suggestions, propose operational improvements which reduce noise and overhead etc.

Process and planning

Be able to write or add to a development plan, and clarify where required.

Help the team to make good estimates.

Pay and benefits

The salary is £40-45k, with 25 days paid holiday, plus bank holidays, plus paid time off between Christmas and New Year.

We have a core hours working policy for our product team, which gives you flexibility about your start and end time, and there is the option to work remotely some of the time.

On top of the salary, the company operates a long-term incentive plan (LTIP) bonus scheme. There are also company and Beehive Lofts’ perks such as exercise classes, free yoga classes, discounts, gadget insurance, free coffee, and breakfast. Everyone also gets Perkbox membership.

Applying for this role

If you're interested, the first step will be an introductory phone call with Guy Thouret (lead software developer), so Guy can tell you a little more about the company/role and you can ask some questions. If that goes well then we’ll invite you for a face to face interview and ask you to complete a short code challenge so we can have a look at your work.

Please apply with your CV and an introductory note so we can start the ball rolling.
