JavaScript Developer (small company, in-house product, ambitious plans!) at FLG (Manchester, UK)

*** No agencies or recruitment companies please - we'll get in touch if we need your assistance ***

Who we are

FLG is a CRM focused on workflow to automate and control processes. Our customers rely on us to make sure nothing is missed, and no opportunity is left behind.

We've been in business for 12 years and have built up a great reputation and a loyal user base. We're proud of our Trustpilot rating of 4.7 / 5.

We're based in Ancoats, Manchester, in Beehive Lofts; an inspiring coworking location in a stylish listed building.

The challenge

CRM is a competitive space, and to stay ahead, we have to be on top of our technical game. We're working on building whole new feature groups into our platform. Recently we've added a drag & drop, multi-page data collection feature, telephony integrations, and appointment booking flows. Take a look at our changelog for the details. We’re also working hard to ensure our platform is fit for purpose and will support our growth ambitions. We’ve got big plans for 2020 to modernise our core platform and need a great team to help us do that whilst keeping the product moving forward for our customers.

We’re looking for a number of JavaScript developers with broad technical skills across the stack (particularly in SaaS/web app development), who will fit into our team, communicate well, and enjoy getting things done.

How we work

We're a small team where everyone contributes and all voices are heard. We have a  product manager, business analyst and are looking to expand the team to 6 developers.

Our focus is on working iteratively, getting working software into customer hands as early as we can and making sensible technical decisions without bureaucracy.

We're small enough for everyone to speak to customers and we take every opportunity to invite product feedback. Our latest mechanism is our feedback site.

We’ve got a brand new lead software developer to help guide our ambitious plans in 2020 and beyond.

Technology stack

Our latest features are built using React/Express and hosted at AWS. Our legacy stack is a LAMP stack hosted on bare metal servers. We use a messaging bus and APIs to connect our 2 platforms together, but customers see the 2 platforms as one product. A major project is underway to phase out the legacy stack and unify around a single tech stack.

Here’s an overview of our new stack:

  • JavaScript / TypeScript / ReactJS Frontend

  • DynamoDB, Redis, MySQL, ElasticSearch, S3

  • Gitlab for workflow and CI/CD

During the platform migration there may be a need for you to read and understand the logic of some PHP and Flow code.

Is this for you?

We've put together a list of technical and soft skills we're looking for.

Communication skills

Be able to communicate effectively and clearly, developing rapport with others in the business, giving clear updates on projects, etc.

Work collaboratively and seek the timely opinions of colleagues and customers so you build the right things. Always focused on solving a customer problem.

Team centric

Be easy and supportive to work with and always ready to help colleagues when they need it. As a small team sometimes it’s all hands to the pump on the rare occasions things don’t go to plan.

Technical skills

A skilled JavaScript developer with experience across the stack using TypeScript in modern frontend and backend frameworks.

Be able to acquire a good understanding of our code base, the design patterns, how they operate, the architecture, etc.

Make reasoned, pragmatic, technical decisions quickly, and support colleagues doing the same. Be commercially aware and keep things simple.

Be proactive

To raise ideas in the team about how we can improve our products, processes, and practices. For example, make process improvement suggestions, propose operational improvements which reduce noise and overhead etc.

Process and planning

Be able to write or add to a development plan, and clarify where required.

Help the team to make good estimates.

Pay and benefits

The salary is £40-45k, with 25 days paid holiday, plus bank holidays, plus paid time off between Christmas and New Year.

We have a core hours working policy for our product team, which gives you flexibility about your start and end time, and there is the option to work remotely some of the time.

On top of the salary, the company operates a long-term incentive plan (LTIP) bonus scheme. There are also company and Beehive Lofts’ perks such as exercise classes, free yoga classes, discounts, gadget insurance, free coffee, and breakfast. Everyone also gets Perkbox membership.

Applying for this role

If you're interested, the first step will be an introductory phone call with Guy Thouret (lead software developer), so Guy can tell you a little more about the company/role and you can ask some questions. If that goes well then we’ll invite you for a face to face interview and ask you to complete a short code challenge so we can have a look at your work.

Please apply with your CV and an introductory note so we can start the ball rolling.
