Experienced Web Developer at Bendyworks (Madison, WI)

Who You Are

First, the basics: you want to live in wonderful Madison, WI. We hire full-time developers to work on-site in our downtown Madison office.

Next, you highly value the "soft" skills. You are professional, communicate well, and have empathy, compassion, and understanding for others. These are qualities that make a good developer great.

Finally, you're excited to share technological knowledge with us. We value teaching each other, and we want to add people who will learn with us. You bring the experience and enthusiasm that makes Bendyworks a vibrant place to think and work.

What You'll Do

As a developer at Bendyworks, your job is to create happy customers. We do this in three main ways:

  1. Work with customers to determine what they want and let them know what to expect.
  2. Deliver working products that meet these expectations.
  3. Keep Bendyworks running smoothly.

There's more to say on each of these points:

Working with customers

You'll know the vision and scope of the customer's project as well as gritty day-to-day details. You'll work with them on the daily tasks of agile software development: breaking down projects into stories that are well-specified and helping them choose the best course of action.
You will nearly always work out of our office in downtown Madison, though we may ask you to travel for project kickoffs. Expect to average 1-2 trips per year.

Working with software

Your job will be to primarily develop software in Javascript, Rails or Ionic. As this is a position for an experienced, mid-senior level developer, you should have at least a couple years of professional experience.
We love working in pairs to write code, and do so a decent amount of the time. When thats the case, you'll work together creating, maintaining, or upgrading a client's codebase, according to the client's needs. You'll keep up with changes, improvements, and vulnerabilities in our chosen technologies so you can deliver the best services available. You'll work to improve performance, usability, and code clarity where it's important to your client.
We also need you to be, or become confident working alone, as sometimes our customers need an individual developer.
Making clients their dream applications means solving challenging technical problems every single day. We draw on our developers' expertise at all levels of the development stack, from client-side JS to servers to databases and beyond.

Meta-Bendyworks

Bendyworks is a small company. We work together to keep Bendyworks running, so you'll have some responsibilities outside of the traditional "developer" role. You'll participate in retrospectives and efforts to make Bendyworks thrive. Expect to be involved in the team, whether it's through hiring, mentorships, training, blogging, sales, volunteerism, or a role we haven't invented yet.

Benefits

Bendyworks is a fertile place for a developer. We love pair programming. We strive to work sustainably, so your health and happiness is a primary consideration. You will have regular Growth Time to work on self-directed projects as we view constant improvement as par for the course. We often socialize on Thursday taco nights and play games after work on occasion.
Listed in the 2014 and 2016 Best Places to Work by Madison Magazine.

  • 3 weeks paid time off per year; 4 weeks after three years with us
  • 2 weeks sick leave per year
  • 6 weeks parental leave
  • health insurance
  • dental insurance
  • short and long term disability insurance
  • 11 paid holidays each year
  • conference budget

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

Hands-on Chief Technology Officer / VP of Engineering (e-commerce) - Remote at Natural Health Sherpa (Charlotte, NC) (allows remote)

Excited to take on the challenge of strategically leading our tech team from the comfort of your home?

Eager to join a team of high-performing, yet humble A-players that simply get things done?

Excited to be a part a rapidly growing $250 billion+ industry while measurable improving peoples lives?

If so, and youre a seasoned, marketing-oriented, strategic-thinking technology leader with lots of hands on full-stack experience, has built and led efficient development teams and has an incessant drive towards excellence, an unquenchable curiosity and a get-it-done now mentality, wed love to talk.

Weve posted this both as a CTO and VP of Engineering role as both equally describe the actual opportunity and the day-to-day authority and responsibilities. To be 100% clear, this involves both heavy hands-on coding as well as strategically building and managing our tech team.

Were really looking for a seasoned engineering leader who has made lots of mistakes, has learned from that and mastered the art of technical discipline and smart decision making.

Who We Are:

We're an 8-figure direct response company that's been profitable since day 1 of our founding in 2010. Were in the process of re-branding our company to Metabolic Living. As part of this, were launching a branded e-commerce website that more accurately reflects our full suite of products weve developed.

And to help lead us into our next stage of growth, were hiring a hands-on, strategic-thinking CTO to continue building out our small, but highly efficient tech team. We have a number of exciting projects we need a full-time CTO to lead development efforts on:

  • Were porting our outdated website at www.naturalhealthsherpa.com to our modernized content and commerce platform were building at www.metabolicliving.com on Shopify (this work is already being done by an outside agency).
  • Were strategically integrating our in-house direct response platform that weve built over the past 8 years with Shopify so we can leverage the best of elements of each platform
  • An end-to-end assessment of tools weve built internally to determine what should be migrated to SaaS and what we should continue to develop/maintain
  • Developing strategy to extend our success into the mobile app world; as up until now, weve been 100 web-focused with no app, but we have a huge opportunity with our own app
  • Strategically guide the companys overall tech decisions as we continue on our path towards building out a billion-dollar lifestyle brand that penetrates into the offline retail channel

We're riding the $250+ billion annual tidal wave of demand for natural health products. And were positioning our new brand to be right on top of that wave. It is an extremely exciting time for us now.

Our nutrition courses and exercise programs are designed to deliver the most results in the least time. For example, our exercise videos deliver the same or better benefits in just 15 minutes, 3 times a week than do traditional exercise programs that require 60 minutes, 5 times a week. Yes, really.

You can see an example of one of our exercise products at http://www.metabolicrenewal.com as our e-commerce happens on product-specific websites for now. All e-commerce will happen on http://www.metabolicliving.com as part of the re-branding.

We also formulate state-of-the-art nutritional supplements and functional foods that fuel your metabolism to generate the energy you need to consistently perform at your peak. For example, instead of taking weeks to notice a difference, it takes just days to feel better.

We practice what we preach: our company is designed so everyone both enjoys their work challenges while having plenty of time to do what they love to do the most in their life. We recruit only high-performing, humble people who produce in fast cycles, hold themselves accountable and have fun.

We’re looking for a Senior Data Engineer who is a self-starter and fast learner. As a key resource in our Engineering group, you will be a core participant in the three missions of the team:

  • Implement new algorithms, adapting proof-of-concept scientific tests into scalable production-ready software (meaning optimizing performance, addressing edge-cases in the best manner and identifying pitfalls or misuses that need to be avoided, as well as sometimes have them run real-time).

  • Ad-hoc data analysis, working with Research and Business Development teams to analyze data from the ground up. This can be exploratory work to validate a new hypothesis about our data, designing an experiment to assess a new test’s readiness for production, or developing new outputs for premium partners ahead of broader full-scale roll-out.

Our Ideal Candidate Has:

  • M.S in Data Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Algorithms, Computer Science with major professional experience in mentioned fields

  • 4+ years of professional data engineering experience

  • Experience with data engineering frameworks and technologies including Linux,  AWS system administration, Luigi/Airflow/etc, Hadoop/Spark/HBase

  • Experience with scientific python and/or C++ programming frameworks

  • Experience with designing and maintaining big-data algorithms and infrastructure

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills

  • Passion for dogs and genetics

Bonus points for:

  • An interest in staying up-to-date on the latest developments in computational biology and big data frameworks

  • Full-stack software engineering experience (including relational databases, familiarity with JS, and web development)

You Will:

  • Lead and be accountable for your projects with help of peers in the team, in terms of planning, designing, implementing and documenting the outcomes and findings

  • Mentor and support peers in the team in achieving their own goals

  • Collaborate with the science team and the product development team, guiding them in how to retrieve or process the data and metrics that we present to our customers

  • More generally work cross-functionally with other teams to deliver the best value not only in your field of expertise but also better understand dog genetics and dog breeding and what matters to our customers and use this as an input in your day-to-day work

What We Offer:

  • Startup perks with big-company benefits

  • Competitive salaries, all-inclusive health care, and equity participation

  • A flexible vacation policy along with paid maternal and paternal leave

  • Fully-stocked office snack bar and regular office events

  • New iMacs and MacBook Pros

  • Generous travel allowances
