Senior Data Engineer at Telegraph Hill (Boston, MA)

About us:

Discover your dog more than fur deep with the most comprehensive DNA test on the market. Designed by world leaders in dog genetics, in partnership with Cornell University, the Embark DNA Test tells owners what breeds make up their pets, how to prevent future possible health problems, and what features and traits their pet might have. Help us end preventable disease in dogs and improve the lives of pets and their people through genomics.

Embark is the only dog DNA test using a research-grade DNA microarray, letting us give our customers the most accurate and comprehensive results on the market. More importantly, it allows us to do ongoing research into the genetics of dogs, which are a fantastic population for genetic discovery due to selective breeding over time. Our research focuses on mapping new traits and diseases, improving personalized veterinary medicine, and developing new breeding programs to eliminate preventable diseases in pets.

Interested in joining? We're looking for highly-motivated and driven employees who will help us stay on the cutting edge of creativity and innovation in the fast-growing consumer genetics space.

The Role:

We’re looking for a Senior Data Engineer who is a self-starter and fast learner. As a key resource in our Engineering group, you will be a core participant in the three missions of the team:

  • Design and develop our bioinformatics/genetics pipeline. This consists in production engineering of data analysis pipelines that take genetic genotyping data and apply our secret-sauce algorithms to generate the health, breed, traits, diversity and other reports that our customers love.

  • Implement new algorithms, adapting proof-of-concept scientific tests into scalable production-ready software (meaning optimizing performance, addressing edge-cases in the best manner and identifying pitfalls or misuses that need to be avoided, as well as sometimes have them run real-time).

  • Ad-hoc data analysis, working with Research and Business Development teams to analyze data from the ground up. This can be exploratory work to validate a new hypothesis about our data, designing an experiment to assess a new test’s readiness for production, or developing new outputs for premium partners ahead of broader full-scale roll-out.

Our Ideal Candidate Has:

  • M.S in Data Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Biomedical Engineering, Algorithms, Computer Science with major professional experience in mentioned fields

  • 4+ years of professional data engineering experience

  • Experience with data engineering frameworks and technologies including Linux,  AWS system administration, Luigi/Airflow/etc, Hadoop/Spark/HBase

  • Experience with scientific python and/or C++ programming frameworks

  • Experience with designing and maintaining big-data algorithms and infrastructure

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills

  • Passion for dogs and genetics

Bonus points for:

  • An interest in staying up-to-date on the latest developments in computational biology and big data frameworks

  • Full-stack software engineering experience (including relational databases, familiarity with JS, and web development)

You Will:

  • Lead and be accountable for your projects with help of peers in the team, in terms of planning, designing, implementing and documenting the outcomes and findings

  • Mentor and support peers in the team in achieving their own goals

  • Collaborate with the science team and the product development team, guiding them in how to retrieve or process the data and metrics that we present to our customers

  • More generally work cross-functionally with other teams to deliver the best value not only in your field of expertise but also better understand dog genetics and dog breeding and what matters to our customers and use this as an input in your day-to-day work

What We Offer:

  • Startup perks with big-company benefits

  • Competitive salaries, all-inclusive health care, and equity participation

  • A flexible vacation policy along with paid maternal and paternal leave

  • Fully-stocked office snack bar and regular office events

  • New iMacs and MacBook Pros
