Did you know Vipps is more than peer to peer payment? #Backend #Java # Golang at First Engineers (Oslo, Norway)

For Client: Vipps
Location: Oslo

In Vipps we're on a mission to make life easier for people and businesses through smart payments.

We started out as an initiative at one of Norway's largest banks with simplifying peer-to-peer payments and replaced your account number with your phone number. In six months, we reached a million downloads. Today half of Norway's population use Vipps. Last year we became a company of our own, owned by more than 100 Norwegian banks, and currently we are working on drastically simplifying the way people and businesses do payments.

That being said, we are far from finished with growing our product portfolio!

Our backend systems run in container services on the public cloud. They are mainly written in Java, Go and Python, but we strive to use the best tool for the job without getting religious in our technical choices.

We are looking for developers with a strong background in Java as well as experience and interest in other programming languages. We value automation, simplicity, and attention to details. We loathe too many meetings, too many stakeholders and excessive planning. If you recognise yourself so far and you believe in the merits of hypothesis-driven experimentation, continuous deployment and validated learning we are on a good note already!

To sum it all up we feel like a startup with the benefits and stability of a large institution. Here you will spend most your time on new developments and exciting new products.

We do know that you most probably already have a job you are more than OK with. Therefore, we have made an application process which also reflects our name. Try it out and VIPPS we may be teaming up soon!

Python Cloud Engineer - remote at Platform.sh () (allows remote)

Platform.sh is a groundbreaking hosting and development tool for web applications. We’re a European VC-Backed startup with a host of blue-chip Enterprise clients and a string of awards and grants (including €2m from the EU Horizon 2020 program). To reinforce our technical prowess, we are looking to grow our engineering team. If you’re looking for an exciting, high-growth opportunity with an award-winning, cutting-edge company, this could be just the job for you

For its groundbreaking PaaS solution https://platform.sh is looking for a Pythonian Cloud Engineer with a taste for Go, good Linux system understanding, and a real hunger for the challenges of building robust, distributed systems.

Platform.sh is a PaaS shrouded in a lot of black magic (we can consistently clone a whole running cluster, with its state, databases, indexes in a matter of seconds). We want to get this down to the hundreds of milliseconds domain. Interested? There is more...

Our external API is pure Hypermedia REST + oAuth on top of Pyramid. It mechanizes the Git layer and needs more features.

We can consistently generate from the same manifest a Docker container, an LXC one, or VM disk images (AWS, Azure, OpenStack), we want more targets.

We probably have the highest industry container density. We need to get it higher.

We support any Python, Ruby, NodeJS, PHP, Java and .NET time to roll-out Elixir, of course Elixir, and Rust.

We need to have more auto-healing on the high-availability clusters. We need more performance out of our multi-protocol ssh proxy. We need work on our Ceph Implementation; We need to get the Debian package generation streamlined and faster. We need… great ideas on how to make Platform.sh even better. Interested? Join us!

This is a remote position and occasional travel to cool places like Paris, France, may be required.

Skills & requirements:

Required:

  • Be a really really good dev that likes testing, understands how an OS works, knows networking, how git works, and the constraints of a distributed system.

  • Be proficient in Python (2 out of 3 of our dev team learned it while on the job, but we'd prefer someone who has already mastered it.)

Would be really great if you had:

  • Great Golang experience.

  • Experience with C (we contribute to a bunch of upstream projects, like LXC) is a plus; Love not required.

  • Great knowledge of Git

  • Good Networking background (routing/protocols)

  • Good grasp of practical security and cryptography

  • Experience with other programming languages (Haskell anyone? Java, Javascript, Ruby, PHP? Common Lisp?)

  • Good knowledge of how the Web works (Hacking Nginx with Lua a plus).

  • Good understanding of how database systems and search engines work

  • A good notion on distributed systems (consensus protocols like Raft/Paxos, eventual consistency models, gossip protocols)

  • Working knowledge of Puppet

  • Mad Debian Skills. Sporting a Debian plaid cloth during the interview is not frowned upon.

Technical Lead at Flypay (London, UK)

We are building Flyt, the universal integration platform for the hospitality industry, that seamlessly connects venues serving food and drinks to the 100s of apps that customers love, through one universal award winning API.

How can you contribute?

To achieve our vision we need to build the best APIs that developers would love to use. And we want to hear from creative and capable engineers who love solving problems.

Through our APIs we can power and integrate a variety of experiences: Pay at Table, Delivery, Bar Tabs, Order at Table, Order Ahead, Table Management, Digital Voucher Redemption, Food Ratings, and many other solutions built by best of breed service providers. We now work with leading hospitality operators and consumer platforms including Nando’s, Mitchells and Butlers, PizzaExpress, Just Eat, and Facebook to enable solutions in thousands of venues across the UK.

You will lead a team of 2-3 Developers and will be responsible for accepting the work, making sure it is done to the right standard, that it is done quickly, that the team works well together as a team, and that team members are all performing. Each team normally is responsible for a certain product on our platform and we expect them to own the development of it, they have the autonomy to make decisions.

We also want you to be passionate about personal development and growth, our Tech Leads work with each team member on their development, and discuss how they could improve and suggest what they should work on.

Our Tech Stack:

Our PHP application powers both our API and POS integration layers and makes up the majority of our development effort. Recently we have introduced some Golang and Node services as we break this monolithic API into slimmer microservices. Recent projects have included: modelling POS communication using a stream of events using AWS Kinesis and Node JS Serverless Lambda Functions, a migration from AWS EC2 to Kubernetes and site reliability work to ensure we can scale our flagship products inline with our current growth.

What will make you a great fit.

  • You are proud of your work and are always eager to learn new things, even if it's outside of your job responsibilities.

  • You love working with difficult things and making them sing. Sometimes we work with POS from the 1930s and we have to work out how we will integrate it and make it awesome.

  • You can work in PHP but don't mind moving between languages. We have some Go and quite a bit of Node.js going forward so we expect you to be adaptable.

  • Ability to build a vision for the technical direction of the components that your team is responsible for. You will work with the product team and will help them find creative workarounds to technical constraints. You should be able to anticipate where changes might take place and design the code to handle them.

  • You are a people person: you can engage the team in the shared vision and encourage the healthy debate in order to solve problems.

  • You are an easy-going but assertive, you know how to earn respect through technical competence and experience and can boost the confidence of everyone else on your team.

We have launched an Instagram account to give you an insight into our day to day life. Feel free to follow us :)
