As our Engineering Manager, you will aim to improve the writing process and better the lives of students through building a strong engineering culture, technology strategy, and development process.
Chegg is already a leader in physical and digital textbook rentals, learning services, and online educational assistance. Chegg wants to continue to help students save time, save money and get smarter by growing its excellent Writing Tools platform. Currently composed of four of the largest student citation services in the world - EasyBib.com, CitationMachine.net, Bibme.org, and CiteThisForMe.com, the team reaches over 30 million students from all over the world. In addition, the Writing Tools team is building next-generation writing tools to help students with other aspects of their writing process, including grammar and plagiarism checking.

- Put the student first and lead creative and holistic thinking across the engineering organization to improve our technology and the way we deliver it
- This role entails running a full engineering stack team with primary stakeholders (Business, Product, Marketing) based out of Chegg’s New York office and hence it requires extensive experience working in similar environment

Skills & Requirements
- 6+ or more years of software engineering experience for web or mobile
- 2+ or more years of software engineering experience for the web or mobile in a leadership position
- Have experience creating consumer-focused products and features
- An awesome communicator and storyteller that can rally support for an engineering vision and strategy
- Must have recent hands-on experience at both an architectural and code review level
- Experience managing a distributed engineering team
- Have lead teams through new product development along with refactoring and consolidation of technologies across different properties
- Past experience in a polyglot stack:
- PHP 5.6/7.x, modern JavaScript and Ruby (sometimes, on Rails)
- Caches (like Memcache/Redis)
- Experience with databases (MySQL/RDS, MSSQL/RDS)
- Profiling tools (like NewRelic, Tideways)
- Experience with building REST based services in Java/PHP is an added advantage
- Deep understanding of and hands-on experience with modern development approaches (containerization, using Amazon Web Services, CD, micro-services, modular reactive web applications)
- An infectious passion for engineering excellence
- Nice to have: Experience with education related products
