About the role


Mbed OS is a new platform operating system we are building that integrates the security and software services needed for developing this next generation of secure, connected devices based on Cortex-M SoCs. As Windows and Mac OS X did for the PC ecosystem, and Android and iOS did for smartphone apps, mbed OS will be one of the key platform operating systems that enables developers to effectively create and deploy billions of innovative IoT devices.

About the group


The Internet of Things is the next computer revolution, where devices become internet connected citizens themselves, creating all sorts of disruptive opportunities for society and business. Arm has setup a new division to help realise these opportunities by creating software and services focused on IoT enablement. Our team is building Mbed OS, a secure, low power and connected open-source operating systems for Arm Cortex-M SoCs that can be used by 100,000s of developers creating these connected IoT devices.


What will I be accountable for?



  • Creating next generation debug tools specifically targeting IoT devices and their unique needs

  • Enhancing debugging of the implementation and power consumption of IoT microcontroller applications

  • Making the software platform an intuitive and productive experience for all types of developers

  • Collaborating with the rest of our engineering team

  • Helping our developer community be successful

  • Lots of software in assembly, C, C++ and Python!


What might my day-to-day responsibilities include?



  • Delivering key roadmap items for our IoT debug strategy

  • Lead developer and maintainer for pyOCD, our open-source python binding for the CMSIS-DAP protocol

  • Help developers identify, solve problems and fix bugs

  • Learn from the problems developers face and propose ways tools can make this go away

  • Creating examples and tutorials on how to use these tools

  • Contributing to the larger full stack open-source OS and tools that we are developing


Job Requirements


What skills, experience, and qualifications do I need?

You need to have in-depth experience working with hardware and software for microcontroller based products, have developed debugging tools or be very experienced in how they work, and generally be super excited about things like SWD, flash algorithms, instrumentation, tools/software co-design and helping people solve problems beyond just providing breakpoints. You should have a good handle on USB working on MCUs.  
 
You also need experience having been a project lead or responsible for a medium sized software team with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a relevant subject.


You also need to be proficient in multiple of the following areas:



  • Cortex-M microcontrollers and peripherals

  • USB device stacks for microcontrollers

  • Compilation process and tools, C libraries and microcontroller startup

  • Thumb Assembly, C, C++, Python, compiler optimizations and code generation

  • Flash programming methodologies over JTAG or SWD

  • Bootloaders and File-systems

  • gdb, OpenOCD - either developed or contributed to something similar

  • Clear technical communicator and considered the guru in your current role
