We are looking for an Engineering Manager who will help us improve & build Chegg’s writing tools product. Our Writing Tools platform is composed of four of the largest student citation services in the world - EasyBib.com, CitationMachine.net, Bibme.org, and CiteThisForMe.com. The team reaches over 30 million students from all over the world. In addition, the Writing Tools team is building next-generation software to help students with other aspects of their writing process, including grammar and plagiarism checking. Chegg is doing big things, and we want passionate awesome people to help us achieve them.
We’re looking for a candidate who wants to better the lives of students through building a strong engineering culture, technology strategy, and development process. In this role you will get to drive both the engineering strategy and team development. You’ll get to work with teams across the world, and across the US.
Responsibilities:
- Manage a team of 6 engineers and help grow it
- Highly competent in four key areas: Team Development, Technology Strategy, Execution, and Engineering Culture
- Team Development – Proven ability to build great teams and develop others.
- Engineering Strategy – Defining and driving the engineering strategy we desire to have a scalable architecture as we exploring bring forward lots of data in discoverable ways to our students and institutions. We need to build a rapid way of testing ideas
- Execution – Deliver on-time with high bar of quality our engineering solutions
- Engineering Culture – Foster an environment of ownership, innovation and technical excellence in our deliverables
- Must be able to work and influence a cross-functional team of executives
- Provide thought leadership on engineering vision and strategy and create alignment in across platforms and products within the Learning Services Space
- Put the student first and lead creative and holistic thinking across the engineering organization to improve our technology and the way we deliver it
- This role entails running a full engineering stack team with primary stakeholders (Business, Product, Marketing) based out of Chegg’s New York office and hence it requires extensive experience working in similar environment
Requirements:
- 3+ years of management experience in software engineering for web or mobile
- 7+ years of software engineering experience for web or mobile
- Have experience creating consumer-focused products and features
- An awesome communicator and storyteller that can rally support for an engineering vision and strategy
- Must have recent hands-on experience at both an architectural and code review level
- Experience managing a distributed engineering team
- Have lead teams through new product development along with refactoring and consolidation of technologies across different properties
- Past experience in a polyglot stack:
- PHP 5.6/7.x, modern JavaScript (React/Redux) and Ruby (sometimes, on Rails)
- Caches (like Memcache/Redis)
- Experience with databases (MySQL/RDS, MSSQL/RDS)
- Profiling tools (like NewRelic, Tideways)
- Experience with building REST based services in Java/PHP is an added advantage
- Deep understanding of and hands-on experience with modern development approaches (containerization, using Amazon Web Services, CD, micro-services, modular reactive web applications)
- An infectious passion for engineering excellence
