Primary Responsibilities:

The Application Systems Engineer works as part of a highly collaborative team supporting multiple business applications, both vendor products and in-house developed, for multiple business units within Campus Services. This role is responsible for operational support of these applications as well as the implementation of new applications or upgrades and enhancements to existing applications.

Operational Support:



  • Monitor, troubleshoot and resolve production issues and requests in a timely manner. Use root cause analysis to fix recurring issues

  • Work to document and automate routine system tasks

  • Work with system vendors to identify and fix complex hardware and software problems

  • Provide day to day support for business applications

  • Provide rotating 24/7 on-call support (~1 week out of 10) to ensure that customer service levels are met

  • Collaborate to continuously improve processes, policies and procedures

  • May provide training to clients/staff


Project Delivery:



  • With limited supervision, execute, coordinate, and perform technical aspects of project including installation and configuration of applications

  • Develop integration code to enable data exchange between multiple vendor products

  • Work across a broader team of business users, project managers, vendors, developers and architects to determine the right design and architecture for the applications

  • Practice good QA discipline, utilize Agile methodologies and security best practice for development and implementation

  • Gather business requirements from end users and translate into technical design specifications

  • Provide input to estimates and complete deliverables committed on projects successfully

  • Collaborate to review project plans and proposals and develop project objectives; identify project responsibilities by determining the phases and elements of the project; calculate time frames and sequence the stages of the project

  • Review, evaluate, and monitor technical scope

  • Ensure the preparation and delivery of required project documentation

  • Prepare and provide project status updates

  • Contribute to communication plan and change management

  • Absorb and leverage project related tools to ensure effective project management and collaboration

Basic Qualifications



  • Minimum of 2 years post-secondary education and/or relevant work experience

  • Demonstrated understanding and working experience with server operating systems Microsoft Windows or Linux, both preferred

  • Experience with relational databases and SQL scripting, Microsoft SQL Server or Oracle, both preferred

  • Experience with one or more scripting / programming language (Unix shell, Windows BAT, Power Shell, Java, C#, Python, PHP, etc.)

  • Basic understanding of networking, including IP addressing, ports and key protocols

  • Proficient with full Microsoft Office Suite


Additional Qualifications



  • Strong oral / written communication skill and customer service skills

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills

  • Experience with cloud hosted environments preferred
