This position is part our Global Operations Infrastructure Engineering team (GLOPS-ITS). The primary responsibilities of this role include network infrastructure architectural design, operational improvement with automation, implementation engineering, and participating in the build out of new designs and technologies.
The GLOPS-ITS team supports the Rakuten global backbone network (RBN), data center connectivity, systems engineering efforts (compute, storage) and the virtualized platforms that run these services. You will be part of a globally distributed 24/7 operational support team responsible for supporting all core infrastructure services; acting in a Tier 3 and above capacity. You will also work on projects ranging new data center build outs, automation, monitoring / telemetry improvements, platform infrastructure services, and capacity planning and improvements, to name a few. You will be expected to interact and work along globally diverse Rakuten business units / subsidiaries to facilitate the design, implementation and operations of infrastructure services. You will also provide the technical expertise required to resolve issues escalated beyond our tier 1 NOC and participate in a 7x24 on-call schedule.
Ideal candidates will have extensive / expert level networking engineering backgrounds and prior hands on experience with many data center technologies (facilities, cabling, compute, storage).
Main Responsibilities
- Ensure the design, maintenance, and monitoring / troubleshooting of the network infrastructure is operational and meets business requirements
- Responsively maintain Rakuten networks (e.g., scheduling, upgrades, patch, version control)
- Support the testing of new network designs and implementation plans
- Resolve maintenance issues of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires involves readily identifiable factors
- Tier 3+ technical network support; leverage knowledge of network analysis and performance evaluation to provide support
- Create and contribute to technical networking process and procedural improvements
- Change requests and projects; Manage projects with limited technical and organizational scope
- Actively contribute to the development of network automation
- Exemplify sound network engineering practices to promote standards, policies and procedures
- Document solutions to routine problems and suggest improvements
- Lead and mentor other engineers
Skills & Experience
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in a network engineering role configuring and troubleshooting core networking technologies: switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers
- Expert experience configuring and troubleshooting the following technologies: BGP, OSPF routing, NAT, ACLs, VLANs, STP, LAG, SNMP, SPAN / Protocol Analysis
- Expert knowledge of 1G/10G/40G physical cabling / transceiver standards: fiber optic types/sizes/capabilities, transceiver types/options
- Moderate experience with VMWare ESX and Linux
- Ability to document work and share knowledge with other team members
- Ability to collaborate with both internal and external teams
- Deep understanding of public cloud networking and cloud interconnect solutions from Amazon Microsoft, Google - VPCs, VNETs, Direct Connect, Express Route
- Experience with the following network vendors: Juniper, Cisco, Citrix NetScaler or F5 BIG-IP
- Experience with backbone technologies MPLS (L2/L3 VPN, LDP, RSVP), VRFs
- Experience with VXLAN EVPN, MP-BGP
- Ansible and Python network automation experience
- Experience with Git/SCM, Vagrant
- Experience with network monitoring solutions such as: Nagios/Cacti, MRTG, Smokeping, etc
- Ability to self-manage and find opportunities for improvements within our services
- Extremely strong written and verbal communication skills
Certifications
- CCNP or JNCIP level of experience or better required
