As a Principal Software Engineer for Comcast's Video Insights and Analysis group, you will have the opportunity to collaborate closely with video engineers, business developers, and data scientists to lead the development of cutting edge streaming data pipelines.
Leveraging both open source and commercial frameworks, you will influence the design and development of innovative data products that process high-volume, high-velocity streams to enable real-time analytics and data driven decisions that help us improve the quality of Comcast's IP video services.
What are some interesting problems you'll be working on?
Develop systems capable of processing billions of events per day, providing both a real-time and historical view into the operation of our video-over-IP systems. Design data collection and enrichment system components for scale and reliability. Work on high performance in-memory data stores and a massive historical data store. Continue to evolve data products and apply new industry standards in a fast-changing ecosystem of big data and open source technologies.
Core Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Video organization leaders to align goals and affect a migration to a common streaming data platform
- Select the most efficient and impactful software design, coding standards, and industry best practices to deliver production quality software components
- Define the requirements and architect SaaS components to expand the feature set of an existing large scale streaming data platform based on Spark, Kafka and AWS Kinesis
- Asses and leverage technological advancements of the fast growing big data ecosystem to develop innovative data products
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
- 10+ years of experience developing enterprise software solutions
- 7+ years of experience object oriented programming in Java or functional programming in Scala
- Familiarity with statistical software, advanced analytics, or machine learning
Preferred Qualifications
- Academic or equivalent work experience in software engineering, computer science, or mathematics
- 5+ years of professional experience with distributed system design and development of large scale data engineering components
- 5+ years of professional experience developing MapReduce applications with Hadoop
- 2+ years of experience working with Amazon Web Services (EMR, Lambda, S3, Kinesis)
- 2+ years of experience developing Spark applications
- Familiarity with distributed and NoSQL databases (Redis, MemSQL, DynamoDB)
- Familiarity with serialization frameworks such as Avro, Thrift, Google Protocol Buffers, and Kryo
- Familiarity with container technologies (Docker/Kubernetes)

The Video Insights and Analysis (VIA) team's charter spans the analytics value chain and includes the data engineering, data science, and software engineering required to deliver insights to our teammates. We're part of the VADER Organization, a department within Comcast's VIDEO division which supports a mix of video related activities including signal acquisition, deployment, site reliability engineering and content Management. We support both legacy QAM delivery and IP video infrastructure that's been built to deliver a broad mix of on-demand video, live TV streams and an assortment of other digital media to an array of connected devices in the home.
