How will you invent the future?

As an Infrastructure Strategist at Merck’s Austin IT hub, you will be part of inventing tomorrow. Our Innovative centers are where great people come together and deliver solutions that save and improve lives. Your hands on can-do approach to document, visually represent, configure, deploy, script and automate infrastructure will improve our global capability. Your contribution will increase process efficiency and deliver innovative technology in part by collaborating with DevOps teams. The successful candidate will have a significant impact on Merck business, drug development, and patient health.

You will:



  • Use scripting and systems administration experience to improve management of infrastructure (Servers, Storage and Databases).

  • Bridge DevOps and infrastructure teams to bring reliability and savings to deployed systems.

  • Provide a future vision for infrastructure that balances required legacy app support with modern design for resiliency, cost efficiency and goodness of fit.

  • Architect solutions that can deliver large scale highly resilient services, minimizing human operational demand.

  • Address both Merck’s significant internal infrastructure and increasing cloud presence.

  • Troubleshoot specific infrastructure and application issues with the intent of future automatic programmatic resolution.

  • Be resilient to traditional methods and assumptions by maintaining a can-do attitude.

  • Focus on compliance. In the pharmaceutical industry, compliance is important. Your design, documentation and implementation must satisfy compliance requirements.

  • Create and contribute written and other visual content that explains efficient methodology implementations to team members and managers via workgroup sessions and presentations.

  • Execute proof of concepts for infrastructure production use cases and create training materials.



Education:



  • Bachelors Degree preferably in Computer Science, information systems, or another field with relevant experience.


Required:



  • A minimum of five (5) years of professional work experience.

  • Domain knowledge of servers, storage, or databases needed to support infrastructure.

  • Experience scripting with Windows or Linux environments using at least one script language.

  • Experience with IaaS, VMware vSphere, and monitoring tools for infrastructure.

  • Experience using at least one database technology, Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL


Preferred:



  • Adept at managing global & diverse perspectives in an unbiased way across multiple stakeholder and communities.

  • You’ve used Jira and Confluence or similar collaboration tools.

  • Architecture experience for cloud resources (AWS or similar), and asset tracking (CMDB).

  • Administration experience of a scale out storage system, other distributed systems or services.

  • Administration experience with databases, Oracle, MSSQL, MySQL, Postgres or Cassandra.

  • Familiar with leading backup software and data replication technologies.

  • Familiarity with SRE, experience operating within an SRE program a plus.

  • Experience with IT (or other) supply chain.

  • Experience giving presentations, communicating within a team, in person, over a screen sharing software which may include being on camera.
