To stop deforestation, we need to know where it is happening and who is responsible in time to take action. Global Forest Watch (GFW) is the only free online platform providing near-real time information and analysis about when, where and why forests are changing around the world. We use machine learning algorithms and expert analysis to distill satellite imagery, crowdsourced information, and hundreds of open datasets into actionable insights and policy-relevant information about forests worldwide


GFW is seeking for a data engineer to work with our global datasets on forest and land use change with billions of data points. You will be working within a matrixed group across both technical and non-technical teams within Global Forest Watch, including product managers, GIS analysts, internal software engineers and external web developers. You will bring web-scale technology to standard GIS operations, build complex data pipelines and manage large datasets for analysis and display on our web applications. We will rely on you to diagnose and mitigate performance issues and you will contribute to technical decision and system design related to our platform.


Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Geography, Environmental Science or similar

  • Minimum 4 years of relevant full-time programming experience Proven programming experience using Python and other coding languages such as Scala, Golang or C++

  • Familiarity with big data tools such as Hadoop and Spark

  • Familiarity with spatial analysis and GIS tools like ArcGIS, GDAL, OGR2OGR and PostGIS

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services, including EC2, EMR, and Lambda

  • Experience with tools for continuous deployment including Terraform, Github, Docker, Jenkins and Kubernetes

  • High proficiency in English
