Lead Java Developer - Build new user features for a website used by millions at Rightmove (London, UK)

Note: This role is located in London, UK and is unable to offer visa sponsorship or paid relocation.

What Is The role?

We are looking for an experienced java dev who is ready to help build and lead the Vendor team, alongside the team lead. The team lead line manages the team, works on business strategy, product management and delivery; whilst you, the tech lead will define technical solutions that meet those business needs and coach the rest of the team to help them reach their full potential.

Who Are The Vendor Team?

  • Our team will provide a renewed focus for a key audience: sellers and landlords.

  • The team will be building brand new consumer facing features as well as optimising existing products, such as House Price Search, which is already used by millions of users a month to help them understand the housing market and make decisions about property.

  • Example projects for the future include:

    • Web features to help people keep track of changes in their local housing market.

    • Web features to assist people to find the ideal agent to market their property.

  • You will be joining four friendly, talented Rightmovers - a Team Lead, Business Analyst, JavaScript Developer and QA Tester. We will be looking to grow the team in future and you will help define and recruit who we need.

A Typical Week In The Vendor Team Might Involve…

  • Creating and testing prototypes with users to get early feedback on new feature ideas.

  • Designing new microservices and technical solutions to support the creation of new features.

  • Building and supporting roll out of microservices to support well established features widely used by the public.

  • Showcasing what you've developed to the company: the heads of the business, CEO, dev community, sales, marketing, etc.

  • Working with the Architects and other tech leads to keep our code quality and technical design strong.

  • Collaborating with the team to help work through challenges and improve the way we work.

  • Identifying tech debt and work that needs to be done outside our business goals and help prioritise and schedule this work.

  • Mentoring and coaching the team, helping them to achieve their own goals and supporting them in their career development.

Why Join Our Team?

  • Our team will build brand new features which should...

    • Help solve genuine user problems which no-one has as of yet.

    • Help satisfy people obsessed with the property market and Rightmove.

  • We will be improving existing features already well used by the public, your work will be exposed to millions of Rightmove users.

  • Our audience, vendors are the key to our success as a business.

  • We use all the latest tech including Elastic Search, Kafka and Spring; our core tech stack is Java, Javascript and React.

  • We are a lovely team, a social, cheerful bunch.

We’re Looking For Someone Who…

  • Would relish the opportunity to lead a team from a technical perspective.

  • Wants to mentor and coach the team, helping them meet their own development goals.

  • Is passionate about code quality and good architectural solutions.

  • Likes to get stuck into coding too, hands on.

  • Is collaborative by nature and loves to be part of a team.

  • Is comfortable with supporting high traffic features and revenue generating products.

  • Is interested in user facing features and has an appreciation for business drivers and commercial objectives.

  • Is open to the use of different languages and tech stack where it makes sense.

  • Brings improvements to the table that perhaps we don't even know about, whether that be, tech, process or anything else.

  • Wants the challenge of something brand new.

  • Contributes to the Rightmove tech lead community and developer community.

Ultimately, we care much more about the person you are, how you think and approach things, than a list of qualifications and buzzwords on a CV. Even if you can’t say ‘yes’ to all of the above, but are smart, self-motivated and passionate about delivering great solutions then get in touch.
