The Position


As a Software Engineer in the Sensitive Data Access team you will work closely with other software engineers, researchers, DevOps engineers, the project lead and our User Experience team to realise real-world applications for data-driven research projects and technology innovation. The goal is to build software systems that make more data readily available, whilst still maintaining privacy. At Data61 every project we work on represent a new technology, data or idea that will benefit the Australian community and economy.


Your ability to learn quickly, contribute ideas, and use agile approaches to develop production software will be crucial to your success in this role. As a member of the Sensitive Data Access team, you’ll use a combination of Scala and Python to further develop our cloud-based microservice architecture. If desired, there will be opportunities for contributing to front-end development in JavaScript as well. 


Strong communication skills and a collaborative focus are essential to this role, as we are a team with expertise in various disciplines that needs to work together cohesively to deliver best in class outcomes.

To be successful you will need:



  • Bachelor degree in a scientific or engineering discipline such as Computer Science OR equivalent commercial experience in software engineering.

  • Experience developing in Scala and/or Python.

  • A history of developing robust and secure applications. (We love code examples – please send us anything you have developed that we can look at, eg. open source projects.)

  • Ability to collaborate and grow with a multidisciplinary, regionally dispersed software engineering team.
