Team Lead Software Engineer: Data Products at Vacasa (Portland, OR)

What We're Looking For:

You should be comfortable building, deploying, and maintaining production ETL and API services in addition to having previous management experience. This position will require you to be especially comfortable and candid about admitting what you don’t know. As the team lead, you do not also have to be the lead data scientist. Humility, skepticism, and playfulness will be greatly appreciated. You should strive to enable, educate, and empower those around you. A background in statistics, data science, or any research discipline would be awesome but is not necessary.

What You’ll Do:

You would be leading the engineering team that builds the data and machine learning systems that make Vacasa a leader in the industry. These systems include pricing, search recommendation, scheduling, and demand optimization. As a full-stack and multidisciplinary team, the team is responsible for features that span web front-ends, APIs, back-end services, monitoring/alerting, configuring deployment containers, ETL pipelines, and applying machine learning or other mathematical frameworks.

As the team lead your responsibilities will mostly cover project management, human management, architecture, and some actual development. You should expect to spend around 30% of your time coding but you’ll have the autonomy to adjust to what works best for the circumstances.

What You’ll Need:

  • Experience as a Team Lead or Manager

  • Experience with Git, Python, APIs, and SQL

  • Comfortable using Linux, bash, and command line

  • Experience with building resilient, cloud-based, and distributed systems (ideally AWS)

  • A good understanding of build/release processes, continuous delivery, and devops

  • Experience with Agile/Scrum development processes

  • Interest in data science problems, and a basic knowledge of key data science concepts

  • Ability to work onsite at our Portland office 5 days/week

Preferred Qualifications:

These qualifications are not required but are valued

  • Experience with SciPy, NumPy, or Pandas

  • Experience with Data Science and/or working with Data Scientists

  • Experience with Spark, Hadoop, Scala, Kafka/Kinesis, and Data Processing

  • Experience with Docker

  • Experience in math, statistics, or any research discipline
