The Opportunity
We are looking for a Director of Engineering to take us to the next level by helping us scale our teams and drive our product to a new frontier.
What you will do:
- Provide guidance and mentorship to a fast growing development team
- Build a strong sense of ownership for the team and individual contributions, in a highly collaborative culture, focused on producing world-class software solutions. Build a world-class team through hands-on recruiting of top-tier talent
- Work closely with product and engineering management to build an idea from concept to delivery using excellent software design, coding and processes
- Build and manage engineering teams comprised of highly motivated managers, developers and engineering leads
- Provide technical oversight while also developing technical leadership within the team
- Create a culture of technical discussion and curiosity, crisp project estimation, data driven decision making and be able to arbitrate choices amongst strong and well-informed opinions
- Build incredible platforms around the needs of the customer and solve problems in simple ways
- Participate in an Agile process, working with Product Management, Testing and QA and Infrastructure Engineering to translate product use cases and user stories into industry-leading implementations.
- Implement and support test-driven development and continuous integration initiatives.
- Create common services, templates and utilities that can be leveraged across the platform to accelerate delivery and mitigate maintenance
- Evaluate appropriate new technologies, tools, frameworks and commercial or open source software components for integration
- Hands-on development including the creation of software development artifacts and documentation
- Regularly communicate with leadership and executive team about risk analysis and design trade-offs
Ideally you have:
- Experience managing software development managers and teams of engineers, building enterprise SaaS products, successfully shipping code on time and with quality
- Leadership ability, demonstrated through previous experience developing, recruiting and mentoring a top-notch technical engineering team
- Previous coding & design skills, working on scalable service infrastructure in one of the following: Ruby, Java, Scala or Python
- Experience and education equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Mathematics / Engineering or a related field
- 10+ years of professional industry experience and minimum 5 years of experience in leading high performance engineering teams as a leader
- Experience with mobile and web applications would be an asset
- Knowledge of agile software development principles, practices, and full system development lifecycle
- Understanding of the operational concerns of SaaS and the ability to work with the development team to deal with it's challenges
- Ability to make routine decisions as well as sound complex decisions in a fast-paced, technical environment
- Capable of planning and executing on both short-term and long-term goals individually and with the broader teams
- Solid intellectual curiosity and desire for excellence around leading teams, building product and scaling teams
- Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal) are required as this is a technical leadership role with a strong emphasis on people management and development. Position requires a good mix of both technical and communication skills (internal and customer facing)
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment with cross-functional teams
- Demonstrated ability to work across platforms with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of software development
