Director of Technology at LEO Learning (Brighton, UK)

Reporting to the LEO Managing Director, The Director of Technology will lead the development of the company's technical strategy & offer, placing LEO firmly at the cutting-edge of the marketplace; continue growth of internal capability in order to deliver on the strategy; and act as a key strategic architect for major programmes of work.


This requires envisioning the company’s technology offerings, leading implementation of applications and tools to meet business and strategy goals, and planning for risk and growth.

Responsibilities


Strategy & Planning



  • In partnership with the management teams, identify opportunities and risks for delivering the company’s services, including identification of competitive services, opportunities for innovation, and assessment of marketplace obstacles and technical hurdles to the business success.

  • In partnership with the management teams, review and implement best practice project methodology for different types of development project (for example waterfall vs agile), and disseminate and implement as appropriate.

  • In partnership with the management teams, review current and future skills requirement and input into talent attraction and competency frameworks.

  • Identify technology trends and evolving social behaviour that may support or impede the success of the business.

  • Continuously evaluate and identify appropriate technology platforms (including web application frameworks and the deployment stack) for delivering the company’s services.

  • Act as a key stakeholder for sister company gomo, representing LEO in the development and delivery of the product roadmap.

  • Lead strategic planning to achieve business goals by identifying and prioritising development initiatives and setting timetables for the evaluation, development, and deployment of all web-based services.

  • Collaborate with the appropriate departments to assess and recommend technologies that support company organisational needs.

  • Establish a governance process that meets government, partner, and company expectations for customer information privacy, and GDPR in particular.

  • Direct development and execution of an enterprise-wide information security plan that protects the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the company’s data and servers.

  • Direct development and execution of an enterprise-wide disaster recovery and business continuity plan.

  • Communicate the company’s technology strategy for investors/board, management, staff, partners, customers, and stakeholders.

  • External support and consulting to make best use of and recommendations on how to adopt & implement technology through consulting and pre-sales.


Implementation


General



  • Collaborate with the management teams and potential customers to develop use cases (or user stories) and specifications that describe the implementation of the company’s services.


Talent



  • Collaborate with the management teams and HR to define current and future skill requirements.

  • Collaborate with the management teams and HR to define job descriptions and competency frameworks.

  • Inspire and lead LEO’s technical studio: software engineering, QA and DevOps andHosting teams.


Innovation, Propositions and Product



  • Generate ideas and participate in the innovation process and product and propositions teams to suggest new product ideas and methods of future learning, communications and knowledge delivery.


Software Development & R&D



  • Continuously, enhance the company’s software development methodology.

  • Establish a specification conformance and testing regimen based on user stories and the User Experience design.

  • Promulgate coding conventions and documentation standards.

  • Continuously enhance the company’s software development process, setting short-term objectives and assessing progress as defined by the selected software development methodology.

  • Continuously enhance and monitor performance profiling tools and procedures.

  • Continuously enhance company’s development releases.


Internal/External Services



  • Continuously enhance the company’s web-based internal communications systems, such as a wiki, blog, chatroom, project management, and bug tracking systems

  • Continuously enhance the company’s secure extranet for client access to share upload/download resources

  • Internal thought leadership


Sales & Marketing



  • Support sales bids/pitches as required

  • Work with account teams to develop technical strategies for key accounts

  • Work with marketing team to develop the external technical voice of company - social media, conferences and speaking engagements


Knowledge & Experience



  • University degree in the field of computer science, business administration, or another rigorous discipline.



  • Demonstrated ability to envision web-based services that meet consumer needs or solve business problems.

  • Hands-on experience coding in more than one currently popular web application framework.

  • Familiar with more than one software development methodology.

  • Ability to discern user requirements and develop specifications.

  • Knowledge of web standards.

  • Experience with Linux system administration and web server configuration.

  • Knowledge of Internet protocols and RFC standards, database management systems, and version control systems.

  • Familiarity with technical requirements of Internet marketing and search engine optimization.

  • Familiarity with information security vulnerabilities and risk management.

  • Familiarity with consumer privacy and payments industry compliance requirements.

  • Exposure to business theory, business process development, governance processes, management, budgeting, and administrative operations.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced high energy environment

  • Experience in strategic planning and execution

  • Ability to apply IT to solving business problems

  • Experience in IT planning, organization and development

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations as they relate to IT
