DevOps Engineer - Clearance Required at BrainGu (Chantilly, VA)

This DevOps engineering position is embedded in a multidisciplinary team which creates solutions under tight time frames to support federal law enforcement operations. Composed of Software Engineers, Network Engineers, Systems Admin, Security Engineers, and DevOps Engineers, everyone works together without silos to get the job done. The ideal candidate will lean toward generalist and be willing to learn a little bit of all the roles to better participate. Prototype capabilities put together for specific operations will often be "enterprised" for use by a wider audience for future operations or common use cases. Because of this dynamic, the team experiences a mix of fast-paced prototyping and routine enterprise development work tempo depending on the week.


Required Competencies and Certifications



  • Active Top Secret or Secret Clearance, TS/SCI Eligible

  • Ability and willingness to travel to Chantilly, VA on a daily basis


    • Depending on operational needs, telecommute options may be authorized
      at the discretion of the Technical Lead and client approval.


  • Work well under pressure, can meet tight deadlines, and is committed to work as needed to complete time-sensitive tasks


    • During low ops tempo times, considerable flexibility in working hours
      is granted to balance the need for dedication to mission.


  • Ability to communicate complex topics to customers and peers verbally and in writing

  • Ability to understand and execute functional and technical specifications

  • Ability to stay current with technology trends to assist in evaluating future hardware and software needs

  • 4 years experience: Systems engineering and/or administration

  • 4 years experience: Working with staged environments


    • (ie. development, integration/testing and production)


  • 4 years experience: Ability to install, configure and maintain systems


    • (such as file servers, email servers, application servers, print servers, workstations, storage devices, or others)


  • 4 years experience: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve network problems

  • 4 years experience: Administering system security and performing security checks


    • (such as checking Nessus scans, logs, configuring SELinux policies, firewalls, authentication, or others)


  • 4 years experience: Monitoring systems to ensure availability


    • (such as Nagios, SolarWinds, ELK, Microsoft Systems Center, or others)


  • 4 years experience: Administering multiple operating systems across servers and workstations


    • (such as Windows, Linux, MacOS, or others)


  • 4 years experience: Administering and configuring Cisco and Juniper network devices

  • 4 years experience: Administering and configuring blade server technology

  • 4 years experience: Administering and configuring NAS and SAN storage

  • 4 years experience: Using at least one cloud computing platform


    • (such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Compute Engine, or others)


  • 4 years experience: Administering server-class virtual machine environments


    • (such as VMWare vSphere/vCenter, Xen/XenCenter, KVM, Qemu, or others)




Desired Competencies and Certifications



  • Shell scripting to handle repetitive tasks


    • (such as sh, ksh, bash: can be any of one (1) of these, but preferably all three (3))


  • Experience with containerization technologies


    • (such as Docker, rkt, Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, or others)


  • Ability to identify bugs and suggest patches


    • Troubleshooting software issues in source by tracking errors to specific code and
      work with developers for quick fix


  • Experience administering and configuring one or more technologies from Amazon Web Services


    • (such as EC2, S3, RDS, IAM, VPC, Lambda, SES, Route53, or others)


  • Being aware of patches/new versions with security based packages: OpenSSL, etc

  • Research new versions of software or firmware on critical systems before install to determine necessary operational changes

  • Experience architecting networks and use of network standard technologies


    • (such as RFC1918 IPv4 schemes, routing using OSPF and BGP, building VPNs using OpenSSL and IPSec, or others)


  • Real-world understanding of a broad range of computing technologies and a history of providing innovative solutions to complex problems
