Gartner is recruiting for a candidate with deep hands-on experience in healthcare provider (healthcare delivery organizations/HDOs) strategies, technologies and best practices. The successful candidate will become a leading industry voice in how IT enables HDOs revenue cycle management and all other critical administrative imperatives in rapidly changing healthcare markets globally. The analyst will engage CIOs and their teams on how to achieve priority objectives associated with HIS/HMS, RCM, workforce management, ERP, computer assisted coding, real-time physician documentation, and other key administrative technologies along with related data and analytics.

Given the rise of a variety of digital technologies, a shift to value-based care, and unrelenting pressures on costs, success in HDO RCM and administration is a dynamic area of great focus among HDOs. Clients business needs range from achieving overall modernization to costs savings, digital business enablement, alliance management, and operational optimization. The candidate will advise HDO CIOs and other IT executives clients on the reference models, roadmaps, and technology solution providers they should consider for those initiatives.

As a Senior Director, Analyst, the candidate will collaborate with other team members to identify and conduct research on topics that are the most important to our clientele. That research includes primary surveys, personal interviews, secondary research, vendor briefings, peer-based insights, and the expert interpretation and analysis of all of those sources. The research will focus primarily on applications supporting administration strategies and processes, the architecture of foundational technologies/applications in the space, and innovations in related traditional applications, best practices, and emerging digital technologies.

The candidate must be able to guide Gartner clients as they plan and prioritize initiatives, scope requirements, complete procurement processes for technology platforms and services, deploy and implement technology solutions and optimize IT systems and services. The individual must also be knowledgeable about foundational issues and technologies of concern, such as cloud, to HDO leaders including related regulatory requirement and the emerging issues and needs in the management of personal and real-world health data. The individual must also understand the unique challenges CIOs face in driving innovation within typical HDO business organizations and cultures.

The ideal candidate will be knowledgeable about administrative processes associated with arranging and accounting for care including patient registration through discharge, billing, scheduling, resource management, staffing, accounting, contracting along with associated activates including patient engagement, network management, and physician engagement. The candidate will bring a strong grasp of healthcare industry trends and financing models.

He or she will also understand the touch points between care delivery and clinical operations with back-office administrative tasks. The candidate should have experience with one or more of the major HDO HIS and RCM technology vendors (e.g. Allscripts, Change Healthcare, Cerner, Epic, 3M, Infor, Optum, MedeAnalytics, SAP ) as a HDO employee, vendor, and/or consultant. Experience as a CIO, CTO, or enterprise architect of an HDO would be a plus. The analyst will have the ability to address management and political challenges within HDOs and have strong technical knowledge and skills relative to native HDO technologies and applications. The candidate must be willing to travel and address client inquiries in many countries and across many time zones.  


This Senior Director position includes the following specific tasks:  

  • Develop research plans based on capturing client needs of today and the future.
  • Prepare thought-leading, actionable written research, working in a peer review structure.
  • Speak at Gartner or other conferences as a subject-matter expert.
  • Advise clients, in multiple time zones and countries, in how to solve issues at the intersection of business and IT.
  • Assist in the promotion of Gartner research and support Gartners sales force in growing HDO business.
  • Demonstrate sophisticated skill at analysis and excellent communication skills.
  • Arrange and attend vendor briefings, vendor events, client meetings or exhibitions as required to inform Gartners research positions.

  • Revenue cycle management transformation in light of value-based payment models
  • HDO IT governance, strategy, and roadmaps regarding RCM and administration
  • Administrative technologies managing arrangement and transitions of patient care (Admissions, Discharge, Transfer)
  • ERP modernization and related planning to execution best practices
  • HDO technologies associated with coverage areas, for example
  • Infor, SAP, Oracle, Workday (HDO ERP)
  • Arcadia Solutions, Epic, Genia, Oracle (Value-based performance management analytics)
  • Allscripts. Cerner, Epic,  (Enterprise EHR, administration and RCM functionality)
  • EPSi, Illumicare, Infor (Real-time costing)
  • 3M Health Information Systems; M*Modal; Nuance (Real-time documentation)


Desired Skills and Experience
  • 10+ years of experience in the healthcare industry
  • At least 5 years of relevant IT experience working in a healthcare delivery organization
  • Masters in Healthcare Administration a plus
  • Excellent understanding of information technology in HDO RCM and administration, its architecture, and connecting the value of IT to healthcare
  • Understanding of one or more of the major solution providers in the space
  • Understanding of the major forces impacting the healthcare industry and how technology can be applied to create value for the healthcare provider, payer and ultimately the patient
  • Broad understanding of HDO services vendors in the marketplace
