We are looking to recruit an experienced Senior Systems Engineer/Web Server Administrator to join the Web Production team at the European Bioinformatics Institute located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
EMBL-EBI is currently running web applications on over 2000 Virtualised servers in 2 distinct data centres and quickly moving to a container-based environment. Our services receive more that 10 million web requests per day from all over the world that deal with submissions of data into the public repositories as well as providing access to tools for advanced data analysis. The Web Production team is responsible for maintaining and supporting the web infrastructure in a dynamic environment, with new and upgraded applications coming online every week.

Your role


We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic individual that can help improve and manage our services transition to modern working patterns. She or He will report to the head of the Web Production team and will be responsible for communications at the first-line management level, maintain and extend our web infrastructure provisioning practises and support our developers and administrative staff throughout the organisation.

You have


You will have a university degree in a computer science field and demonstrate at least 4-5 years' work experience in the academic or commercial sector. You will have experience in first-line management as well as being directly involved in maintaining large service provisioning infrastructures for general compute as well as web on Cloud and use of containers for web server application deployments.

You might also have




  • Experience in design, implementation and deployment of web-based applications using VMs and containers in hybrid and public Clouds

  • Demonstrable experience in Linux systems administration and web application security

  • Fluency with virtualisation, application containers and Cloud technologies such as VMware, openshift, Docker, singularity, Puppet, etc. and advanced administration of web application servers such as Apache and Tomcat

  • Experience with the administration of systems such as Confluence, JIRA, GIT, Gitlab, Bitbucket, Elastic Stack, and modern service monitoring frameworks

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are necessary for effective communication with internal and external user groups

  • Experience with the responsibilities and duties of first-line managers

  • Fluency in English

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure in a highly demanding and productive environment

  • Professional experience in software maintenance and user support roles
