Senior Java Developer at loveholidays (London, UK)

We are constantly refining our ability to empower consumers to discover holidays by creating ever more intelligent search functionality.  This experience is optimised for all devices/channels and is underpinned by a very low latency system capable of handling very high request volumes.

The role will help drive our search platform towards a fully microservices-based architecture as we continue our journey towards Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD). Our aim is to deliver quality to market with greater release confidence and speed.

What you will need to join our team

  • A solid background in Java development – we’ll be keen to discuss your past projects, the top-level architecture involved and your approach to development in that context.

  • Experience with at least Java 7 for a recent project. You’ll also be able to discuss some of the key new features and benefits of Java 8.

  • Knowledge of microservices. You should be able to outline the differences between a microservice architecture and a monolithic application/platform, including the pros and cons of each setup.

  • Prior experience creating a RESTful API from scratch as part of a previous project and being able to confidently describe your approach to implementation.

  • We’d love to hear about times when you’ve driven the introduction of a new tool or introduced a team to a best practice that had provable benefits.

  • You will have an up-to-date knowledge of Spring and have experience using the framework. You should be comfortable adding Spring Rest controllers, understand dependency injection, be able to define the difference between a controller, service and a repository, and happily discuss the benefits of Spring/Spring Boot.

  • You will own your code all the way through to production and should already have experience pushing features into a live environment.

  • We expect you to have some exposure to CI/CD pipelines and would be interested to hear your views and experiences.

  • We ingest a huge amount of third-party data and our users rely on us for stability and consistency, so we need all developers to consider platform performance and scalability at all times. We’ll want to hear about any defensive development practices you would put in place when dealing with a third-party supplier or data source.

  • Whilst we don’t need you to have a huge degree of experience with Cloud technologies, you should have a general appreciation of them and understand the underlying concepts.

  • As we use a mixture of Scrum and Kanban, we don’t mind what flavour of Agile you’ve used previously, so long as you have some experience working with an Agile mindset. It would also be good to understand how you would improve the Agile process in your current environment.

What we can offer you
Aside from building cutting-edge products backed by the latest tech innovations, we’ve also created a welcoming work environment. We’re a close-knit team that believes in a positive work-life balance, with bi-annual company events, regular after-work drinks, and much more. We provide a great benefits package, including travel discounts, training budget, cycle-to-work, workplace pension, childcare vouchers, gym membership offers, and 25 days’ holiday.

Perks aside, this role represents an opportunity to work in a fast-paced development environment within a disruptive business that embraces leading-edge technology. Our rapid feature lifecycle means you can define, create, test and deploy a feature all in the same week, providing immediate feedback on how it is benefitting customers or impacting the business.

We also believe firmly in the benefits of upskilling and personal development. Initially, that will involve learning or building on your existing skills Solr as part of your day-to-day work, but over time we’ll help you develop or pick-up relevant skills for up-and-coming technologies like Java 11, Reactive Java, Vertx, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD and GCP.

As our team is growing rapidly, you’ll be joining at an ideal time for your own personal career growth. We work hard to ensure that all employees have genuine progression built into their roles, and you’ll have a real chance to move towards a Team Lead role, if that’s something you want.

loveholidays work in partnership with Talent Point, a Hiring Communications business, who have designed this role on behalf of loveholidays. When you apply, Sam or Valentine will give you a call to discuss the role in greater detail, as well as helping you through every step of the process.
