Software Developer at EMBL - European Molecular Biology Laboratory (Heidelberg, Germany)

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic Java developer to join the software development team in EMBL IT Services. IT Services operates and supports the IT infrastructure and services at EMBL headquarters in Heidelberg and for the laboratory’s sites in Barcelona and Rome. Your core duty will be to service the increasing reliance on web based applications. Within the development team, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining existing Java applications and new solutions for projects in coordination with key departments EMBL-wide.


Your role


Your responsibilities will include to:



  • Develop web applications based on Java technology with responsibility for the whole software life cycle, from analysis to maintenance and support of the delivered solutions

  • Maintain and improve our existing Java based middleware and web application infrastructure, focusing on CI and CD

  • Provide support to EMBL users for our portfolio of web applications

  • Closely interact with the EMBL user community to analyse their requirements and to support continuous improvement

  • Manage and customize additional enterprise information system

  • Oversee software projects and service contracts involving external resources


You have


You should have a several years of professional experience in Java based web application development and preferably a degree in computer sciences or similar. Your experience includes:



  • Proficiency in technologies such as SQL and JS

  • Familiarity with tools such as Maven, GIT and Docker

  • A background in Linux system administration

  • A solid technical background in integrating information resources

  • Willingness to learn new skills as the project requires

  • Strong usability skills, an analytic approach and a service-oriented attitude

  • Well-organised, self-motivated and capable of working both independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and English language skills


You might also have



  • Scripting skills in Python or Perl

  • Experience in managing Oracle databases and application servers

  • Knowledge of German as a plus
