The ILR School is seeking a Front End Web Developer for the Marketing, Communications and Web department.


The purpose of this position is to serve as web site and applications developer for the ILR School to support its mission and strategic goals through the development and maintenance of software that delivers visually compelling, engaging, results-oriented, and accessible front-end experiences across multiple devices for departmental and project-specific public web sites.


The Front End Web Developer will need to support the goals and priorities of ILR as follows:



  • Research, analyze, and recommend strategies to best leverage technology.

  • Lead requirements gathering process with project stakeholders from many levels within ILR

  • Engineer and code front-end experiences that conform to and improve upon existing design systems, assets and brand guidelines.

  • Develop and maintain a scalable design system of reusable components and templates.

  • Develop pattern libraries of solutions for common functionality.

  • Test web sites and features for usability and accessibility.

  • Document systems, products, and procedures.

  • Build and maintain relationships and clear communication with project owners, staff and users.

  • Apply knowledge in web technologies to solve communications problems.

  • Apply an understanding of the 'bigger picture' in proposing technical solutions


The Front End Web Developer will:



  • Integrate front-end experiences both synchronously and asynchronously with multiple back-end data sources and service APIs

  • Understand modern security threats and write code that is hardened against attacks and exploits and ensures the safety and integrity of institutional and customer transactions and data.

  • Understand and employ coding techniques to achieve AA compliance with WCAG standards of accessible web sites.


Additionally the incumbent needs to:



  • Proactively seek workflows, tools, pre-processors, and coding standards that support a high level of reuse, maintainability, and alignment with industry best practices of modular design components within a rational and well-communicated design system.

  • Write code that supports strong data capture, SEO, dynamic content optimization to discover and respond to user behavior

  • Willingly and effectively adapt personal workflow to align with constraints imposed by integrated systems

  • Master standard development tools such as Git, local virtualized development servers, standard DevOps and deployment patterns, package managers, editing tools, shell commands, file system and database access, certificate management, etc.


Required Qualifications



  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or web applications programming and 5 to 7 years experience or equivalent

  • Extensive experience in HTML, CSS, Javascript/jQuery, PHP, SQL, relational database schema creation, responsible coding practices such as optimization of queries and HTTP requests.

  • Knowledge of user experience and usability best practices and of UX patterns and composition practice as informed by theories of perception, cognition, and persuasion to ensure actionable communications and increase conversions.

  • Passion for engineering accessible and fully responsive digital experiences across many devices that ensure, at a minimum, AA compliance with web accessibility guidelines as specified by WCAG 2.0.

  • Proven ability to write dependable, modular and reusable code, informed by ever-changing industry best practices.

  • Clear understanding and mastery of tools chains to manage design and front-end projects as efficiently as possible. Examples include: package management; automated build and deployment tools; code organization, naming, and reuse strategies such as Atomic design, BEM; CMS templating and theming strategies; visual regression testing; etc. Extensive knowledge/experience of working with a design system.

  • Well-informed ability to implement, optimize, evaluate, and demonstrate the goal-driven success of visual and interactive design concepts, including typography, color, composition and layout, animation, and use of art and photography.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and transparently in a dynamic, deadline-driven, complex, team-based environment with multiple competing priorities.

  • Intermediate to expert knowledge of PhotoShop, Illustrator, and/or Sketch, both to communicate new prototypes and to receive designs delivered by vendors and implement them in code.

  • Ability to manage interactions and communications with clients and to manage own time to meet schedules

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, collaboration, presentation, and communications skills.

  • Extensive experience working as part of a diverse team of creative professionals, including project managers and non-technical colleagues.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with varied constituencies at many levels of an organization. 

  • Ability to compare multiple technical solutions, communicate the strengths and weaknesses of each, and assist development team members in choosing an appropriate development path.

  • Ability to understand customer needs/requirements and develop and implement appropriate solutions. Possess well-developed problem-solving abilities, analytical, reasoning and judgment skills.


Preferred Qualifications



  • Primary field of study: Programming and web development with focus on engineering front-end solutions for digital.

  • Previous experience with theming Drupal strongly preferred.

  • Experience with Salesforce theming and/or integration desirable.

  • Project management and documentation

  • Web usability and/or accessibility testing experience

  • Familiarity with server-side scripting environments (PHP, Ruby, ColdFusion, JSP, ASP, etc.), SQL queries, web services, and TCP/IP networking standards.

  • Experience in producing web sites in a higher education environment strongly preferred.

  • Background or experience applying web and digital communications to marketing objectives preferred.

  • Knowledge and understanding of fundraising operations a plus. Must be able to use Macintosh with current software packages.
