We are seeking to recruit a text miner/NLP expert/data scientist to lead our text and data mining efforts within the Literature Services Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
Our team runs Europe PMC, the open database of millions of life sciences research abstracts and full text articles, incorporating both PubMed and PMC. A key part of out mission is to integrate this open research literature with public data resources and support database curation workflows.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading text and data mining projects within the literature services team. Working alongside Europe PMC full stack developers and ontology experts, your focus will be on the extraction of key biological named entities, relationships, and events and the development of article triage systems and/or indexing systems to support curator workflows. As your work will be based on Europe PMC infrastructure, the algorithms and tools developed will be publicly available all users of Europe PMC globally.
Specific job responsibilities include:
- Requirements gathering and prioritisation of specific developments
- Development core text and data mining algorithms
- Development of scoring systems for article triage
- Development of semantic search approaches
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate as much of the following as possible:
- Proven experience of a range of techniques in the areas of NLP, deep learning, machine learning.
- Application of these skills within biology/biomedical domain, in an academic, industrial or publishing settings;
- Demonstrated applications, with clarity on your specific contributions.
- Technical ability e.g. Perl, Java, R, Python, XML parsing;
- Flexible approach and ability to take on new skills;
- Self starter and able to manage multiple projects;
- Team player and good communicator
