Director of Engineering - Hamburg Site Lead at Yelp (Hamburg, Germany)

Our Hamburg office is a growing team of more than 40 engineers helping advance the product for business owners around the world, and we’re looking for a leader to steer these teams into the future. This office has teams passionate about various pieces of the business owner experience, including business owner onboarding and engagement, the core of the business owner app for both iOS and Android, and specialized tools for large, multi-location businesses. The engineers on these teams work on a variety of platforms, including backend, web, iOS, and Android.

The office is growing in both headcount and responsibility, and needs an experienced director to lead that expansion. You will be responsible for mentoring a growing group of engineering managers and their teams. It is also expected that you will be active in sourcing and hiring, helping to increase the size and number of teams.

The Director of Engineering - Hamburg Site Lead needs to have a deep technical understanding of modern software engineering practices. While you’re unlikely to be coding on a weekly basis, your teams need to have confidence in your technical abilities and vision. You will be responsible for regular interactions across an ocean and nine hours of time difference. In this position, excellent English communication skills are important.

Primarily, You Will:

• Lead and mentor a team of engineering managers based in Hamburg
• 
  
• Work closely with both product managers and engineering managers to lead feature development
• 
  
• Maintain and develop the team structure throughout the Hamburg office
• 
  
• Manage communications between all of our engineering offices
• 
  
• Guide the hiring process and goals for the office and the larger organization
• 
  
• Deliver a strong technical vision for both the immediate and long-term future
• 
  
• Foster and grow a fun, diverse, and inclusive culture that reflects the Yelp Values
• 
  

You Will Also:

• Expand the scale of the international side of our intern program

• Grow university relations outside of North America
• 
  
• Continue to build international awareness of Yelp as an engineering culture

• Be responsible for budgeting for both engineering and recruiting

• Work with the office head on facilities issues, office-wide events, and other non-engineering tasks

We Are Looking For:

• 
  
• Proven experience leading a team of engineering managers
• 
  
• A “people first” style of management
• 
  
• History of delivering technical projects, both as an individual contributor and a manager
• 
  
• Excellent English communication skills
• 
  
• Previous experience with engineering recruiting
• 
  
• Previous experience managing in a satellite office is a plus
