THE ROLE
As a Backend Engineer at BI X, you will build the backbone of full scale applications related to either human or animal health. Each initiative that you support lasts for approximately 6 to 12 months, progressing from the initial idea to the final product. In those initiatives, you will work collaboratively and iteratively through design and development to deliver fully functioning, web-based and mobile applications that meet business goals. As a Backend Engineer, you will closely work together with Data Scientists and Frontend Engineers, but also with UX Designers on your team.
DESIRED SKILLS & MINDSET
You have a passion for software development and have either contributed to open source projects, participated in a technical community or interest group, or have written or spoken in public about your technical ideas.
Although experienced, you are still an active learner: You tinker with new open source libraries, use unfamiliar technologies without supervision and learn new programming languages in your granted spare time. At the same time, you inspire your peers and more junior team members to learn and expand their skill set.
Key Agile engineering practices such as CI/CD, Pair Programming, Test Driven Development, Microservices, RESTful design and incremental design are second nature to you. You also use them to guide senior client IT leaders on improvement opportunities in their engineering practices.
PREREQUISITES
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or comparable experience
- First-hand experience of the intense collaboration in an agile software development team
- English working proficiency and communication skills (verbal and written)
TECHNICAL EXPERTISE
- Experience with building consumer quality products, enabling business capability and objectives through technology
- Extensive application development knowledge of at least one of the following technologies: NodeJS, Spark, PostgreSQL, nuoDB, Apache Geode, spring
- Knowledge of Ruby on Rails, Java, Scala, Erlang, MongoDB, Docker, *MQ, Apache Kafka, Storm, Cassandra, Datomic, Neo4J, Python, .Net, JavaScript, CSS, SASS is a plus
- Experience in engineering practices such as code refactoring, design patterns, design driven development, continuous integration, building highly scalable applications, application security, functional programming
NON-TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
- You combine creative and analytical skills to develop innovative solutions and find efficient answers to tough challenges
- Complex problem solving energizes you and you enjoy challenging the team for more innovative solutions and communicating this effectively
- You love to keep the customer in mind when writing code as a constant compass for your quality mindset
