Elsevier Education Technology (EdTech) is developing a next generation e-learning product suite which will transform healthcare education. The first of its kind for healthcare education, we use big data, machine learning technology, analytics, and adaptive techniques to track students interactions with content, assessments, and simulations while providing a highly focused, engaging, and personalized learning experience for students which in turn positively impacts patient care.

Reporting to the Director of Software Engineering we now require a talented, hands-on Lead Software Engineer - Platforms to lead and run mixed (technical, design, testing, business etc.) development squad of 3-5 people in this innovative teaching and learning environment. We expect the successful candidate to spend 50% of their time close to the technology, coding and developing software.

As a Lead Software Engineer - Platforms the successful candidate will collaborate closely with the broad EdTech team and will focus on integrating all components of the platform to facilitate effective communications with all key systems utilizing the squad model to support new feature development/product delivery and quality. Our squads enjoy full autonomy regarding how they go about delivering against long and short-term goals, helping to ensure alignment and quality. In addition, we will look to the Lead Software Engineer to work with the business to suggest simple, maintainable product features which meet/anticipate customer needs.

This is a high-profile project within Elsevier and the successful applicants contribution will ultimately be transformative to the business. This will be a new project build out based on a current product. Lastly the person will understand the needs of automation in the SDLC process.

Preferred experience and technology requirements:

Must haves:

  • Recent career history operating as a Senior Software Engineer or similar to show evidence of at least 50% hands on developing web service applications
    • Strong hands-on Agile web application development & client/server development experience (7+ years) to include experience across languages and projects with experience of Java, JavaScript Framework, Spring, SQL preferred
  • Experience developing containerized microservices
    • Experience of successful project/product completion and delivery (ideally involving simultaneous projects)
    • Demonstrable experience of production products, SDLC, REST (and other API) development architecture.  DevOps where the lead will have to instill new processes.


Nice to haves:

  • Knowledge of C# and .NET framework on windows server (huge plus, current application)
  • A background in Educational technology and/or healthcare and nursing is a plus
  • Infrastructure knowledge (AWS)
  • Testing Frameworks (functional knowledge, able to weigh the value add.
