Senior Data Engineer - Digital Factory at Scotiabank (Toronto, ON, Canada)

As the Senior Data Engineer, you will contribute to the overall success of Applied Analytics Digital Factory Canada ensuring specific individual goals, plans and initiatives are executed and delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.  You will ensure all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures. You’ll be responsible for provisioning, managing and operating Big Data solutions on the GCP and Enterprise Data Lake platforms.

  • Champion a customer-focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.

  • Design technical architecture for cloud solutions that meet the needs for scalability, reliability, and performance. This includes, but not limited to, logical system design, I/O design, network design, cloud architecture analysis and design, and systems engineering.

  • Design and define GCP analytics architecture for new cloud computing systems or existing systems migrating to cloud architectures.

  • Implement process automation.

  • Implement CI/CD best practices for the Data Analytics platform.

  • Design strategy for backup/restore solutions of different GCP instances and applications.

  • Provide hands-on technical design and implementation, ensuring technologies are successfully incorporated into our environments.

  • Manage and monitor infrastructure services and related applications in a production and development environment to ensure high availability and reliability.

  • Identify, analyze, and resolve system problems.

  • Work with the infrastructure and development teams to ensure deployment and integration tasks are completed successfully.

  • Ensure security is integrated into all cloud architecture solutions.

  • Collaborate with Data scientists and Data Analytics to help architect, configure, monitor, and support their services.

  • Provide guidance and work leadership to other systems engineers.

  • Develop documentation on new and existing systems.

  • Manage data onboarding into the Hadoop ecosystem

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Actively pursue effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, AML/ATF risk and conduct risk, including but not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Regulatory Compliance Risk Management Framework, AML/ATF Global Handbook and the Guidelines for Business Conduct.

  • Champion a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment; communicating vison/values/business strategy and managing succession and development planning for the team.


Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed?



  • You have at least two years of experience in a similar role.

  • You have experience with Linux and UNIX administration.

  • You have experience with GCP and GCP tools such as BigQuery, Tensorflow

  • You have experience with scripting languages.

  • You have experience with continuous integration tools and platforms.

  • You have experience with automation frameworks and configuration management.

  • You have a deep understanding of security, network (VPN, Direct Connect, Routing, Firewall) and infrastructure components (VMs, AD, DNS).

  • You have a familiarity with general monitoring principles and experience in monitoring and setting up alerting for Cloud components.

  • You have experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery practices.

  • You have strong scripting/automation skills.

  • You have a strong willingness to learn the underlying business.

  • You have good written and verbal communication skills and an ability to interact with others in a team environment.

  • You have a University Degree in Computer Science Engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience.
