As a software engineer in the Apps team, you will work on projects critical to our needs, with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display technical leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to tackle new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward. Nearmap's software engineers bring fresh ideas from all areas, including GIS, imagery distribution, 3D modelling, large scale system design, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day.

A typical day for you may look like this…
- Design, implement and launch highly visible, user-facing features.
- Design and develop large scale web applications.
- Lead designs of major software components and systems.
- Create innovative UI elements.
- Drive adoption of best practices in code health, testing, and maintainability.
- Design, develop, test, deploy, maintain and improve software.
- Work with wider Engineering and Technology teams on cross-functional initiatives across a broad range of technologies, from hardware to high-availability / at-scale web systems
More about what you need to bring…
- Demonstrated technical creativity and problem solving ability.
- Understanding of sound architectural and design practices – a deep understanding is required for the Senior / Principal roles.
- Understanding of modern software development practices and tools – a deep understanding is required for the Senior / Principal roles.
- Knowledge of web development (JavaScript) or ability and willingness to become an expert in a short period of time.
- Understanding of application development, ideally (but not necessarily) in a web application context.
- Deep understanding, and demonstrable experience, in relation to at least one object-oriented programming language.
- Awareness of linear algebra for visualisation / computer graphics (good understanding for Senior and Principal).
- Experience with 2D and/or 3D visualisation would be highly regarded (but not necessary).
- Experience with GIS / mapping applications would be highly regarded (but not necessary).
- Experience with React would be highly regarded (but not necessary).
- Technical leadership / influencing / mentoring skills (Senior and Principal roles only).
- Strong university qualification in a technical discipline *OR* an alternate path that impresses us – we like people who are (and think) different!
