Software Developer - Front End (iOS and Android) at The Economist (Birmingham, UK)

The Economist is the leading source of analysis on international business and world affairs. We deliver our content through a range of formats, from the weekly international print editions to podcasts, videos and web and app experiences.

More than a million subscribers rely on The Economist to make sense of what’s happening around the world. We aim to expand our circulation and subscriptions business by transforming the way we distribute our journalism digitally. To that end, we’re accelerating the development of our flagship consumer products (Economist.com and apps) and investing in our product and engineering teams.

The Economist are re-imagining how our customers interact with the brand.

We are looking for a React Native developer interested in building perform-ant mobile apps on both the iOS and Android platforms. You will be responsible for the architecture and building these applications, as well as coordinating with the teams responsible for other layers of the product infrastructure. Building a product is a highly collaborative effort, and as such, a strong team player with a commitment to perfection is required.

How you will contribute:

  • Understand how all elements of system software ecosystem works together and develop approaches that fit the overall strategy

  • Develop a robust CI pipeline automating builds, test automation, and pre-release distribution of apps to key stakeholders

  • Work with the team to understand the overall technical architecture and how each feature is implemented

  • Ability to write well-documented, clean Javascript / TypeScript code

  • Work on automated testing suites

  • Work with new technologies like GraphQL and Serverless that are used on the platform stack

The ideal skills for this role are:

  • Build pixel-perfect, buttery smooth UIs across both mobile platforms and work closely with the design team

  • Leverage native APIs for deep integrations with both platforms

  • Diagnose and fix bugs and performance bottlenecks for performance that feels native

  • Maintain code and write automated tests to ensure the product is of the highest quality

  • Ability to work closely with the Product Manager to identify testing opportunities as they evolve with the product

  • Experience working in an Agile environment following Scrum or Kanban methodologies

Perks include:

  • Private Healthcare scheme with cover for mental health and pre-existing conditions and the ability to add family members.

  • 25 days holiday (plus public holidays) - and an extra day at Christmas!

  • Core office hours of 9:30 - 5:30, with flexibility either side.

  • Working from home 1-2 days a week.

  • Support for team members who want to speak at events, meetups or write for The Economist’s Digital Team blog.

  • We use adjustable sitting/standing desks, a MacBook Pro and a desktop monitor. We are happy to accommodate if you’d prefer a different laptop

If you’re deeply passionate about working in software and experimenting with fast POC's and have relevant skills and experience, please consider applying even if you don’t think you tick every box. We are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply.  The Economist was founded in 1843 to make the world a better place through better education, open borders, open markets and diversity; our software is one way that we do that.
