Java Software Engineer - TransferWise at TransferWise (Tallinn, Estonia)

We’re looking for an experienced and versatile, product minded Java Engineer to join our growing tech hub in Tallinn. The role is an unique opportunity to contribute to scaling-up further our biggest engineering office and one of the most successful start-ups in Europe. And so to help millions more potential customers save money by using TransferWise.


Your mission...



  • Build and help out scaling-up a world class money transfer product that will impact the lives of millions more customers

  • Integrate payment methods and partners, creating a scalable and automated payments engine

  • Understand our customers and the impact our product is making in their lives - through data analysis and user research - to drive our team and product roadmap

A bit about you: 



  • 6+ years of experience in software development.

  • Passionate about technology and its relationship with business and user experience.

  • Ability to work independently and plan your own solutions to problems.

  • Experience using a back-end MVC Frameworks.

  • Experience with Java 8 and Spring Boot.

  • Experience developing in HTML, CSS and JavaScript

  • Experience developing in a modern front end framework, React is preferred, but experience with other frameworks are also relevant.

  • Experience working with SQL databases, writing custom queries and designing schemas.

  • Understanding of test driven development (TDD), the ability to structure your code so it’s testable, and the desire to write tests.

  • Broad understanding of the concept of minimum viable product and conversion rates.

  • Possess empathy for the user and able to build great code that drives fantastic user experience.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to articulate complex and technical concepts to non-technical audiences.

  • Be willing to travel, to work and learn with engineering teams in UK, Hungary, Singapore and Estonia.

  • Excitement to work in a high-growth company, and throw themselves fully into a revolution.

  • Be open, communicative, and fun to work with.


Some extra skills that would be awesome...



  • You’ll have experience with commercial software development and may have built modular scalable systems

  • You might have used DB abstraction layers like Hibernate or messaging services (Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, JMS etc)

  • You have knowledge of payment platforms, foreign exchange and highly complex systems

  • You have a broad understanding of the concept of minimum viable product (MVP)
