You’d be great for this role if you specialise in database performance and data engineering. We’re building from scratch and make use of modern technology in order to create a bespoke experience, delivered through your phone.

Our APIs were one of the first in the banking world and create exciting opportunities for integration with other FinTechs such as Flux, Habito, Wealthify, PensionBee and more through the Starling Marketplace.
As our Lead Data Engineer, we would like you to own and deliver the following:
- Implementation of database monitoring tools and diagnostics and proactive monitoring and management.
- Improving the build-time and deployment-time mechanisms used for database changes.
- Optimisation of database queries and general usage, for the purposes of both acceptable performance and of correctness.
You’d also be responsible for:
- Extracting, cleansing and transforming data in a Postgres database to be used for analytics.
- Deriving an appropriate model for the data structure to support analytics and business requirements
- Proactive approach to understanding data sources, structure and process constraints.
- Developing the data platform in the bank which covers online relational databases, application logic, data pipelines and big data analytics tools.
- Optimising the performance of and contributing to data processing elements of the banking platform.
- Contributing to the development of analytics capabilities across the various services within Starling Bank.
- Working with the data science team, delivering insights across the business.
- Evangelism of best practice and delivery of training sessions to the wider engineering teams.
Requirements
- Experience building ETL pipelines.
- Confident using Postgres with excellent SQL skills
- Comfortable writing complex queries against large relational databases.
- Software development skills should include Java , but we are open to other object oriented programming languages.
