The Role


This Lead Front-End Engineer will work with our JSTOR Forum development team.


You will be designing, developing and maintaining web applications that are deployed on our cloud-delivered platform and powered by our APIs. You will be a crucial part of a dynamic, energized and agile team, delivering leading edge solutions that are used across the globe by millions of visitors each month.


When joining the development team at ITHAKA, you can expect to receive tool and product training. We have an excellent onboarding program, which enables new engineers to become productive very quickly. A lead will work closely with you as you begin engaging with your assigned agile team. We will provide you with constant support as we work to make you comfortable in your new environment. Those in leadership roles will work tirelessly to set you up for success.



The primary responsibilities of the Lead Front-End Engineer are:



  • Work closely with Product Owner and User Experience Designer to conduct Product Discovery using various testing methods including high and low fidelity prototypes, and live A/B testing.

  • Interact with internal and external customers to understand needs and lead the development of web applications to meet those needs.

  • Participate as a member of an agile team leveraging continuous deployment and test automation in order to deploy application changes to production on average of more than once per day.

  • Implement rich, interactive web applications using the latest technologies, frameworks, and patterns.

  • Leverage web analytics as needed to support Product Discovery and to measure project KPIs.

  • Test, measure, and optimize front-end performance using Application Performance Management and Web Developer Tools.

  • Support and mentor other web application developers.

  • Participate in leadership meetings as needed to provide additional insight to business stakeholders..


Skills, Experience, and Characteristics



  • Expert level skills in CSS/SASS and JavaScript, and experience with Vue.js.

  • Expert level skills in setting up a front-end environment with Webpack, Node, or other similar tools as part of a build process.

  • Expert level skills with UI frameworks like Foundation and Bootstrap.

  • Familiarity with unit and end-to-end testing, particularly understanding testing as part of the development process.

  • Experience implementing responsive design interfaces targeted for tablets and mobile phones.

  • Experience using browser-based web developer tools to analyze and optimize UI performance across multiple browsers and devices.

  • Fluent in accessibility, usability, information architecture, and interaction design principles.

  • Able to interpret data schemas, and has an opinion on API formats.

  • Willingness and ability to learn new approaches and emerging technology.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to support and mentor application developers.

  • Detail oriented.
