Are you a Full Stack Developer looking for an exciting opportunity?

We are looking for experience and motivation. You will join the Literature Services team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBL-EBI) located at the Wellcome Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.


Do you have significant experience in software engineering with Java and related technologies? Are you able to lead projects independently? Have you processed large datasets in a production environment?

We are looking for:



  • A Full Stack developer who has strong experience of at least 5 years in leading and delivering projects both independently and as part of a team.

  • Extensive knowledge of the following technologies will be expected: Spring, Hibernate, Lucene/Solr, Oracle, MongoDB, SOAP/RESTful Web Services, application performance tuning and problem diagnosis.

  • Experience in the following will be desirable: Javascript (jQuery, Angular, ReactJS), CSS, Ruby on Rails, PL/SQL, Unix/Linux command line skills, shell scripting and common command-line tools, Git, issue tracking software (JIRA). You will need to be familiar with best practices in software design and Agile processes (experience as a Scrum Master), experience of testing code/following good coding standards and managing deployments to the live environment. 'Traditional' compute-farm processing (LSF) or next-generation processing frameworks (Hadoop) will be an advantage.

  • Experience in the fields of Biomedicine and/or Scientific Publishing will also be an asset.


Good communication is crucial to the success of our projects, so you need to be able to maintain good working relationships and build new ones. The ability to work independently, efficiently and within defined deadlines, close collaboration with team members, other teams and stakeholders, and being in general a good team player is expected. What we are really looking for is commitment to delivering high-quality public services for the advancement of science.
