We are looking for a passionate Engineering Manager  (Java, SCALA, REST services, SQL) -  (m/f) for our Frankfurt team to help us build the next generation of HEREs automated core map data processing environments.

The Team

You will lead an Agile pod team that is developing tools to source map content in an efficient, scalable and highly automated manner to generate and maintain the freshest and most relevant map. For that you will be translating product strategies into technology strategies, leading the long-term architectural direction and helping your team design and build industry-grade customer-facing geo-data-intensive products. 

Your Mission

As an Engineering Manager in the content and crowd-sourcing unit you will lead a team of highly skilled engineers and will work closely with other engineering & operations teams as well as internal and external users of the tool chains your team develops and operates. Partnering with product managers and the larger mapping business units, your team is charged with the mission to develop smart content sourcing tools for the state-of-the-art Mapping Technologies at HERE, driving forward our objective of becoming a leading, data-driven, location technology company.

Responsibilities

Your Tasks
* Build, lead and mentor world-class engineering team and cultivate a culture of innovation & delivery
* Define the technical agenda, the work and direct the team on multiple projects of varying scope and complexity
* Work closely with product management and map production teams
* Be a technical lead for complex systems and services, working closely with engineers to deliver high quality software on time
* Define long term architectural direction, design and build reliable, scaling and well-performing industry-grade geo-spatial services and solutions end-to-end
* Fully understand requirements, system interdependencies and limitations and translate them into software solutions
* Lead design & code reviews of your own work and the work of your engineers
* Represent your team and lead architecture and design efforts across multiple teams
* Collaborate closely both with strategic HERE Technologies partners and internal stakeholders
* Mentor and coach your team members in software development, automation testing, DevOps and software deployment best practices
* Maintain a broad view of emerging technologies and contribute in roadmap definition
* Provide career development guidance and performance feedback to team members
* Recruiting and hiring top talent

 

Qualifications

 

What you should bring along
* B.Eng./B.Tech./Masters Level Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Geoinformatics
* 2+ years of proven experience in leading an engineering team
* 8+ years of software development experience in data-intensive and customer-oriented environment, including hands on application design and development experience
* Experience working with teams following Agile/scrum and lean methodology, including incremental delivery and continuous deployment.
* Strong Java and SQL skills, in combination with backend architectures, messaging technologies and related frameworks
* Strong knowledge of REST based web service technologies, JSON and XML, SOA and micro services architectures
* Good DBMS skills, with a strong preference on PostgreSQL
* Proficiency with using code collaboration tools (e.g. SVN/Git/Mercurial), issue tracking tools (e.g. JIRA) and team collaboration tools (e.g. Wikis)
* Good knowledge of continuous integration & build tools and CI/CD, with a preference on Jenkins and/or Bamboo
* Very strong communication and organizational skills, including good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
* Enjoy working within a multi-team, multi geographic location environment, as well as experience in working with distributed teams

Nice to have
* Good knowledge of Amazon Web Services technologies (EC2, S3, RDS, EMR,...)
* Experience with virtualization, in particular Docker
* Background on geospatial data handling & management (GIS, PostGIS, etc.)
* Familiar with GeoJSON
* Experience with Non-SQL DB, e.g. MongoDB
